France v Morocco referee: Who is under-fire Argentine official Facundo Tello at World Cup 2026?

Argentine referee Facundo Tello has been assigned to referee France’s quarter-final clash against Morocco, a decision that has instantly placed him at the heart of the latest refereeing controversy surrounding World Cup 2026, even before a ball has been kicked in Boston. FIFA’s choice to appoint Tello, working alongside an entirely Argentine five-man officiating crew, has sparked anger among French fans and media who view the selection as a reflection of growing tensions over perceived bias in favor of Argentina. This marks the first knockout-stage match of the tournament in which all officials come from the same country, intensifying scrutiny at a moment when accusations of preferential treatment toward Argentina are reaching fever pitch.
Argentina’s progression into the quarter-finals has already been surrounded by controversy. The holders advanced in dramatic fashion after a late comeback against Egypt, finishing 3-2 after trailing 2-0, with a goal disallowed for Egypt that drew strong protests over a perceived foul in the buildup to Enzo Fernández’s stoppage-time winner. In response, Mostafa Ziko, whose initial strike had been ruled out before he later found the net, described the tournament as “fixed,” and Egypt subsequently filed an official complaint with FIFA, urging the expulsion of referee François Letexier and his team from the competition.
FIFA’s Chief Refereeing Officer, Pierluigi Collina, pushed back on the allegations, asserting that the integrity of the officiating throughout the tournament cannot be questioned and insisting that the referees operate free from external influence. Nevertheless, the Morocco-France pairing has intensified suspicions and conspiracy theories, given Argentina’s status as one of Les Bleus’ fiercest World Cup rivals for football glory.
Facundo Tello, 44, has long been a fixture in Argentina’s top flight since 2013 and also officiated at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Morocco will carry positive memories of his officiating in Qatar, including their 1-0 quarter-final victory over Portugal. Tello’s appointment has continued to keep his name in the spotlight, as he also became part of Euro 2024 history by becoming only the second non-Uefa official to referee at the tournament, taking charge of Turkey vs. Georgia and Scotland vs. Hungary.
In terms of his track record, Tello has been recognized for his willingness to enforce stringent disciplinary measures. Notably, he became infamous for issuing a high number of red cards in a single match during Argentina’s Trofeo de Campeones final between Racing Club and Boca Juniors in November 2022, when he sent off 10 players. This season, he has presided over Canada’s 1-1 draw with Bosnia and Herzegovina in the group stage and South Africa’s 1-0 victory over South Korea, marking a continued presence in major fixtures ahead of his first knockout match at World Cup 2026.
The upcoming France-Morocco quarter-final in Boston is set to attract intense scrutiny, given the ongoing debate over referee selection and perceived national loyalties. As Tello prepares to take charge, both teams will be acutely aware of the narrative surrounding officiating, and fans will be watching closely to see whether the on-pitch decisions will shape the outcome of a game that has already been surrounded by controversy and speculation.
