Fulham appoint Arbeloa as Silva’s successor

Fulham have named Alvaro Arbeloa as their new manager on a three-year contract, succeeding Marco Silva who opted to take the helm at Benfica. The former Real Madrid defender, who is 43, steps into the Craven Cottage dugout after Silva’s departure, and Arbeloa described the move as a genuine honor. “It is a real honour for me to embark on this new stage at Fulham FC, the oldest club in London,” he said. “I feel a great sense of responsibility and I’m deeply grateful to chairman Shahid Khan and vice-chairman Tony Khan for the trust they have placed in me with Fulham in the Premier League.”
Chairman Shahid Khan welcomed Arbeloa, noting that he is “ambitious by his own admission” and has spent substantial time with top players, clubs and methods in the game. Khan believes these experiences will benefit Fulham. Arbeloa’s enthusiasm for football development extends to the club’s academy, with the new manager stressing the importance of giving young players opportunities. Khan added that Arbeloa’s intent to pursue attacking football resonated with him and the club.
Arbeloa’s appointment comes with the support of strong references from Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez, who was recently re-elected, and Real Madrid’s new manager José Mourinho, with whom Arbeloa played at the Santiago Bernabéu. Arbeloa left Real Madrid at the end of last season and was subsequently replaced by Mourinho after his move to Benfica created a vacancy. Silva, meanwhile, decided to join Benfica despite having received contract offers from Fulham, citing a shift in his plan that surprised the club after five successful years at Craven Cottage.
In a candid interview last month, Fulham’s vice-chairman indicated that Silva had previously expressed a desire to remain, though he ultimately changed his mind and departed. He cited Silva’s five-year track record of success at Fulham, noting the surprise of his decision to leave Craven Cottage.
Prior to Arbeloa’s appointment, links to potential successors included Thomas Frank, formerly of Tottenham and Brentford, while Kieran McKenna, former Ipswich boss, was considered but ultimately deemed too costly when factoring in salary and staff costs. Arbeloa’s background includes time as a youth coach in Madrid, and he stepped in as interim manager after Xabi Alonso’s departure in January. He then led Real Madrid for the final 28 games of the season, guiding them to a runner-up finish in La Liga and a Champions League exit at the quarter-final stage to Bayern Munich.
As a manager, Arbeloa has signaled his plan to bring in players who can implement his footballing philosophy, including attacking midfielder Franco Mastantuono, full-back Fran García and forward Gonzalo Garcia, among others. The club’s supporters and pundits will be watching closely to see how Arbeloa translates his experiences at the highest levels of European football into Premier League results.
