He was a pioneer of international golf, taking his talents around the world in an era when it was far more difficult than it is today. Player has 24 wins on the PGA Tour, 20 wins on the Sunshine Tour, four on the European Tour, and many others all over the world.Even at 90 years old, he’s still going, claiming to have beaten his age on the golf course countless times. Others in the photo are unidentified.Gary Player names the 1959 Open Championship as the memorable moment in his career Player won his first major championship in 1959 at the age of 23 years old, becoming the youngest player to lift the Claret Jug at Muirfield.The South African went on to win nine majors in his career, but to this day he says his first one was the most memorable of them all.Speaking to DeChambeau on his YouTube channel, Player said, “Being the youngest to win the British Open at Muirfield, with wooden heads, heavy shafts, no knocking down spike marks. All those things.“This is where people had no idea, if you tied in a tournament, you went to a 36-hole playoff the next day. 36 holes the next day!“I shot 284. I did not know what I was doing! But I knew how to play, and that is a big thing. Teaching people how to play golf.”Player won by two strokes over Fred Bullock with a 68 on the final day to win his first Claret Jug. He would have got a 66 on Sunday if it wasn’t for a double bogey on 18.It was the first of Player’s three Claret Jugs, as he won again in 1968 and 1974.
