GB’s Hewett keeps alive hopes of Wimbledon double

Great Britain’s Alfie Hewett won two matches on Thursday to advance in both the men’s wheelchair singles and doubles events. Hewett, aged 28, began the day with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over China’s Ji Zhenxu to reach the men’s wheelchair singles semi-finals. Later, the world number two and ten-time Grand Slam singles champion teamed up with fellow Briton Gordon Reid to defeat France’s Stephane Houdet and Ji 6-4, 6-3, earning a place in the wheelchair doubles final. The six-time Wimbledon champions will face Japan’s Tokito Oda and Argentina’s Gustavo Fernandez in Saturday’s final.
The match that propelled Hewett into the singles semi-finals was a tight affair at times, as Hewett and Reid found themselves broken twice in the first set against Houdet and Ji, before overturning the deficit with a four-game surge to claim the opener. The second set faced a 13-minute interruption due to a mechanical issue with Houdet’s wheelchair, which was eventually resolved, yet it did not disrupt Hewett and Reid’s rhythm as they closed out the set and the match.
Hewett is set to take on Fernandez in the wheelchair singles semi-final on Friday, the second match on Court One. In other results, Andrew Penney was defeated 6-0, 6-1 by Spain’s Martin de la Puente in the men’s wheelchair singles second round. Britain’s Lucy Shuker and South African partner Kgothatso Montjane were beaten 6-3, 6-2 in the women’s wheelchair doubles semi-finals by Japan’s Yui Kamiji and China’s Zhenzhen Zhu.
In the quad wheelchair doubles, British duo Andy Lapthorne and Gregory Slade fell 6-4, 6-1 to the Netherlands’ Sam Schroder and Australia’s Jin Woodman. Lapthorne will get another chance to challenge Schroder on Friday, meeting him in the quad wheelchair singles semi-finals at 11:00 BST on Court 14. Live scores, results, and order of play are available as the tournament continues. This recap covers the latest developments across the wheelchair events, with Hewett’s progress marking a significant moment for Britain as the championships unfold.
