German Football Association denies internal rift over Neuer’s World Cup return

Just a few weeks before the World Cup, Manuel Neuer announced his return from international retirement to play for Germany at the tournament. The decision by Germany’s head coach Julian Nagelsmann to bring the 40-year-old back into the squad created a significant public uproar and reportedly sparked internal tensions within the national team, according to a recent piece from the German outlet Ran. The article claimed that several players were unhappy with Neuer’s comeback and that goalkeeping coach Andreas Kronenberg even contemplated resigning.
However, the German Football Association (DFB) has firmly rejected those assertions. In a statement, the DFB denied both a unilateral decision by Nagelsmann regarding the goalkeeping situation and any resignation threat from Kronenberg. While internal discussions were described as controversial and critical, the DFB emphasized that the entire team ultimately remained united behind the decision.
Ran’s report also alleged that Neuer pressed for Alexander Nübel, a goalkeeper he knows from their time together at Bayern Munich, to be excluded from the squad. The DFB again rejected this claim, reiterating that Neuer did not influence the squad selection nor impose conditions for his return, such as demanding Nübel’s removal or the inclusion of Jonas Urbig. The federation’s statement underscored that the comeback was evaluated and decided through proper channels and with the team’s collective support, despite the media speculation that surrounded the process.
The broader narrative surrounding Neuer’s re-entry highlighted a tension between public scrutiny and the internal dynamics of a national team under the pressure of a major tournament. While Ran’s report attempted to depict a fractured camp, the DFB’s rebuttal asserted cohesion and unity in backing Nagelsmann’s plan for the goalkeeping lineup. As Germany prepared for the World Cup, the focus remained on performance and preparation rather than the surrounding controversy, with the federation insisting that Neuer’s inclusion was the result of careful consideration and consensus within the squad and coaching staff.
