With Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart out for at least the regular season, coach John Harbaugh needs to figure out his next steps. If Jameis Winston plays well Sunday against the Titans — after looking awful as Dart’s replacement Monday in Los Angeles — then maybe Harbaugh won’t have to rush to add a legitimate veteran quarterback. Of course, there are not a lot of great options available right now for the Giants, who will head into Sunday’s home game against the Titans with Jake Haener as Winston’s backup. Harbaugh has said he would like to soon bring in — via signing or trade — a veteran quarterback who has at least some experience. So who are the best options? What about Jimmy Garoppolo? He is a free agent. This would be a chance for him to start as he approaches his 35th birthday in early November. NFL Network pinpointed Garoppolo as the Giants’ top option if Winston struggles. Garoppolo has started 70 NFL games, including the playoffs. So he would bring lots of experience, even though he hasn’t started much lately (one game in 2024, six in 2023). The Giants would not need to trade for Garoppolo since he’s a free agent. The same is not true for Mac Jones, who the 49ers seem unlikely to deal. Could the Bengals trade New Jersey native Joe Flacco? Don’t bet on it — at least not right now. Here’s what Flacco told The Cincinnati Enquirer about friends thinking he was about to get traded to the Giants, in a reunion with Harbaugh: “It’s obviously not real and not true, but it was good enough to get people, certain friends of mine, to text me, ‘Hey, I’ll see you in New York.’ I was like, ‘No, guys, you won’t. That’s not true.’” Flacco, 41, began his NFL career with Harbaugh in Baltimore from 2008-18. Since then, Flacco has played for the Broncos, Jets, Eagles, Jets again, Browns, Colts, Browns again and now the Bengals. The Browns traded Flacco to the Bengals in early October last year. (He has now started 217 NFL games, including the playoffs.) Flacco did note that he didn’t see last year’s trade to the Bengals coming, so maybe the same could be true with a trade to the Giants this year. Nothing seems imminent, likely because Flacco, 41, has a 4-12 record in his starts over the past two years, with 17 interceptions. “I had no idea I was going to get traded last year, so you never know,” Flacco said. “But no, I have no reason to believe that. No.”MORE GIANTS COVERAGEGiants injury report: Malik Nabers offers positive update, Andrew Thomas sidelined Could Giants trade for Mac Jones to replace Jaxson Dart? 49ers GM weighs in Giants refuse to fold without Jaxson Dart: ‘It doesn’t matter what anybody else thinks’Jaxson Dart’s injury explained: Could he return this year?
