Giants’ Darius Muasau on roster bubble as training camp approaches

The New York Giants have been stockpiling linebackers the past several seasons, using three top-five picks in the last four seasons to take players at the position. They’ve gotten solid play at the position in recent years, but with a shift in the coaching ranks and a change in the defensive scheme set to be employed, the linebacker room is changing as well.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThe Giants cut their leading tackler from 2025, Bobby Okereke, this past offseason, and added their top tackler from the season before, Micah McFadden, on a one-year deal. But the linebacker room is suddenly loaded with talent. Those three high picks — Kayvon Thibodeaux, Abdul Carter, and Arvell Reese — are being joined by big-ticket free agent Tremaine Edmunds, a former Pro Bowler who will start at middle linebacker and call the defensive signals.McFadden is coming off a lost season, suffering a season-ending foot injury in the Giants’ opener, leading to surgery and landing him on IR. He was poised to have a breakout season in the final year of his rookie deal. Now he returns to a very crowded linebacker room where he may struggle to find a role.McFadden’s understudy was third-year backer Darius Muasau, who stepped in as the starter only to suffer an ankle injury that limited him to 12 games. This year, with all the new additions and the return of McFadden, Muasau begins camp further down the depth chart.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementNew York Post Giants reporter Paul Schwartz recently listed Muasau as a forgotten player who will have difficulty finding a meaningful role in 2026.It might be a bit unfair to put Muasau in this category. He is a try-hard plugger who gives his all whenever he is on the field. Muasau, a 2024 sixth-round pick who has appeared in 27 games and made 18 starts, notched his first and only interception in his first NFL game. He began last season as the starting inside linebacker alongside Bobby Okerke after Micah McFadden was lost to a foot injury. But Muasau did not hold up — an ankle injury forced him out. He has 106 tackles in his two seasons (just five tackles for loss). He is not big, and that could be an issue, considering the player profile new head coach John Harbaugh prefers. He wants big guys, which is why the inside linebacker position was restocked with two huge athletes: veteran Tremaine Edmunds and rookie Arvell Reese, who both stand 6-foot-4, with Edmunds weighing in at 251 pounds and Reese at 243. Muasau cannot stack up to that at 6-feet and 234 pounds. With McFadden returning after missing the entire 2025 season, there might not be a spot for Muasau. The Giants also drafted BYU’s Jack Kelly in the sixth round of this year’s draft. They are high on him, and he could also impede Muasau’s path to a roster spot.1 / 18Week 1: Sunday, Sept. 13 vs. Dallas Cowboys, 8:20 p.m. ET(Vincent Carchietta, Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images)This article originally appeared on Giants Wire: Giants’ Darius Muasau on roster bubble
