​MANITOWOC — I don’t cover the Green Bay West Wildcats football team, but I’ve been covering high school football for 16 seasons.The struggles of the program are well known across the state and especially among schools in the Fox River Classic Conference.Its been 30 years since Green Bay West has made the postseason, yet that might change.The key is stacking wins, like prevailing 35-21 over Manitowoc Lincoln on Sept. 26 to improve to 4-2 on the season.“It’s uncharted territory for us,” Wildcats coach Drew Brusoe said. “I don’t think we’ve had four wins in a season since 1996.”According to the WIAA’s playoff qualifying report entering Week 6, Green Bay West was the first team out of the playoffs, coming in ranked 33rd in Division 3.Every single win is important.“It’s going to take a handful of wins to get it done, but we’re taking it one day, one game at a time,” Brusoe said. “We can’t look forward. He threw for a pair of touchdowns while running another one in.“It was rough, but we came together and fought our way back to doing what we’re used to doing,” Moore said.I’ve always been impressed with the heart of Green Bay West whenever I’d seen them over the years. It takes a lot of determination to keep putting in the work week after week, year after year knowing the postseason has been something talked about and not experienced.More Dombeck: Why high school sports success is about more than on-field wins | DombeckParticipation numbers might be lower than ideal but that hasn’t changed the fight the team has displayed.Besides Moore, running back Kash Lowe was dominant for the Wildcats.He had over 100 yards rushing and scored two touchdowns, moving the chains when his team needed him.Midway through the fourth quarter though, he left with an upper body injury, meaning more players were asked to step up.“The kids are being asked to do a lot and they’ve responded,” Brusoe said.It helps that the entire team is buying in to what could be a historic season for Green Bay West.“Everyone is working together and wanting to win,” Moore said.And while the postseason would be a dream come true, Brusoe admits nothing is guaranteed beyond the regular season.“We’ve got three more weeks of guaranteed football,” Brusoe said. “We can’t worry about the future, just the present and the now.” Contact Tom Dombeck at 920-686-2965 or tdombeck@htrnews.com.
