Guardians Cap Off First Half With a Four Game Win Streak

The Cleveland Guardians closed out the first half of the season by sweeping the Miami Marlins, just before the All-Star break. The win strengthened their momentum as they head into the break on a high note. Joey Cantillo delivered a standout performance to improve to 8-4 on the year, tossing five innings and 85 pitches while limiting the Marlins to one run on six hits and two walks. Cantillo also recorded nine strikeouts, showcasing both efficiency and swing-and-mitch control.
Cantillo faced trouble in the bottom of the second when he found himself in a bases-loaded, no-outs jam. Consecutive singles and a walk had loaded the bases, but he remained unfazed, inducing a pop out followed by two strikeouts to escape without surrendering a run.
Relief came from Franco Aleman in the sixth, Hunter Gaddis in the seventh, and Shawn Armstrong in the eighth, each delivering scoreless, hitless frames to keep the Guardians in command. Cade advanced the team to the finish by closing the ninth in a non-save situation, allowing two hits and a solo homer but finishing strong by recording the final outs and “booking it” for the win.
Offensively, the Guardians struck early and efficiently. In the top of the first inning, leadoff man Travis Bazzana drew a four-pitch walk and promptly stole second, setting up Brayan Rocchio to drive in the first run with a single to right field. Kyle Manzardo followed with an out-inning single that plated Rocchio, giving Cleveland an immediate 2-0 lead.
Rocchio continued his productive day in the top of the fifth when he led off the inning with a homer to right field, padding the Guardians’ advantage. The top of the seventh provided more insurance as the Guardians stretched their lead. Bazzana was plunked to start the frame, and with two outs, Manzardo reached on a fielding error, moving Bazzana to third. A line drive single by Kahlil Watson to short, deflected off the pitcher, allowed Bazzana to score, pushing the tally to 4-0 and extending the lead.
In the top of the ninth, the Guardians tallied again, but this time it came from a different source. Chase DeLauter, who had been the lone baserunner for the Guardians until that moment, crushed a fastball for a home run, driving it 435 feet to the upper deck. The shot padded Cleveland’s lead to 5-1, providing an exclamation point to a dominant performance in front of the fans.
This series represented a refreshing blueprint heading into the All-Star break: a clean sweep, a four-game win streak, and a display of power with multiple home runs. The Guardians now prepare for a return to action after the All-Star break, with Jose and Angel expected back in time to fuel a strong push before the August 3 trade deadline. The momentum from this sweep should carry into Cleveland’s second half as they chase quality wins and look to build on the positive chemistry established during the run to break. The combination of strong starting pitching from Cantillo, timely relief, and productive offense across the lineup provided a balanced, encouraging performance as the team paused for the All-Star festivities and readied itself for the stretch toward the postseason.
