Alan Roden delivered the game-winning hit in the bottom of the ninth inning of his season debut, lifting the Minnesota Twins to a 6-5 victory over the Cleveland Guardians on Wednesday, July 8, in Minneapolis. Roden finished the night 2-for-5 with two RBIs, coming off Minnesota’s promotion from Triple-A Saint Paul just a day earlier. Kody Clemens added to the effort, going 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI, as the Twins extended their winning streak to four games. Brayan Rocchio swatted a homer and drove in three runs for the Guardians, who suffered their fourth consecutive defeat. Rhys Hoskins contributed a solo shot as well.
In the mound, Twins reliever Yoendrys Gomez earned the win (1-0) with a clean inning of relief, adding to his save from the previous night when he closed out the series-opening 3-1 win. Guardians reliever Matt Festa (2-2) took the loss after allowing one run on three hits and a walk in two-thirds of an inning.
Roden’s decisive moment came on the ninth pitch of his at-bat with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. He crushed a deep line drive off the wall in right-center, scoring Royce Lewis to seal the comeback victory. The inning unfolded with Clemens drawing a leadoff walk, Alex Jackson delivering a two-out single, and Luke Keaschall drawing a bases-loaded walk to set the stage for Roden’s heroics, forcing an immediate celebration at Target Field.
Earlier, Cleveland had jumped ahead with three runs in the fourth. Chase DeLauter led off the inning with a single, and Rocchio followed with a two-run homer measured at 401 feet to left. Two pitches later, Hoskins lined a solo shot to left, giving the Guardians a 3-0 cushion. Minnesota answered in the bottom half of the frame, plating three runs to tie the game. The Twins loaded the bases with nobody out, prompting Lewis to draw a walk for the first run. Keaschall then plated the second with a sacrifice fly to center, and Roden followed with an RBI single to center to level the score at 3-3.
The Guardians regained the lead in the seventh with two runs, beginning with DeLauter’s RBI single to right to drive in Kahlil Watson. Rocchio later extended the advantage to 5-3 by laying down a sacrifice bunt, allowing Steven Kwan to sprint home on the play. In the bottom of the seventh, a sequence of erratic Guardians pitching opened the door for a decisive moment in the ninth. Reliever Erik Sabrowski issued back-to-back walks with the bases loaded, setting up the late-inning drama and the winning hit by Roden.
The game was captured in Minneapolis as part of a clash between two heavy-hitting squads and featured notable performances from both lineups. Hoskins’ solo homer stood as one of the night’s highlights, while Roden’s timely hit became the ultimate headline as Minnesota secured the come-from-behind win. The result moved the Twins to four consecutive victories and stretched the Guardians’ skid as both teams continued to jockey for position within their respective divisions.
