​After two straight postponed games, the Hagerty football team was finally able to open the season Monday night. It wasn’t pretty, as 26 penalties were called on both teams, but the Huskies were able to overcome a furious Winter Springs rally to win the Seminole County battle 33-25 on Monday night.Winter Springs scored three straight third-quarter touchdowns — a 44-yard pass play from Jake Lowery to Tristen Raines, an 8-yard interception return by big D-tackle Tony Pritchard, and a 24-yard Lowery pass to Jordan Woods to wipe out a 20-6 halftime deficit to take a 25-20 lead with 1:04 left in the third. Freshman running back AD Santiago-Lopez had an impressive high school debut, running for 137 yards on 19 carries, and his 8-yard touchdown with 5:01 reamaining proved to be the game-winner, putting Hagerty up 26-25.“AD is gonna be something special, without a doubt,” Hagerty coach Steve Mikles said. “The thing about AD is he has no idea how good he can be. He’s humble. … and he’s so fast. He’s got a great shot to be all world around here.”The Huskies tacked on another touchdown when Wyatt Hatfield stepped in front of a Lowery pass and returned it 36 yards for a touchdown to provide the final margin.“I was really proud because we only have 15 seniors. We played a freshman and we played a lot of sophomores,” Mikles said. “The future is bright, but we just gotta mold them into what we want this year.”Hagerty (1-0) stifled Winter Springs’ last scoring threat when Kyler McBurse blocked a 29-yard field goal attempt with 2:01 remaining.Turnovers were frequent. Winter Springs (0-2) got a 37-yard touchdown from Bret Smith on an interception return in the first quarter. Hagerty’s Adrian Ortiz also had a first-quarter interception return for a touchdown, from 35 yards.Hagerty had a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Colton Hatfield waved off due to a block in the back.The game was full of yellow flags. Winter Springs was whistled for 14 penalties for 135 yards, and Hagerty was flagged 12 times for 125 yards.Hagerty senior quarterback Royce Jenkins left the game with an injury with 9:46 to play. Big sophomore Charlie Beniot, 6-foot-2, 230 pounds, came on in his place and performed admirably. He had a crucial fourth-down run to keep a series alive that eventually ended in the Santiago-Lopez touchdown.“I think Charlie had a good game. We’ve always believed in Charlie,” Mikles said. “From his freshman year running our JV program to now, the growth that we have seen has been incredible.
