​HARBOR SPRINGS — September has always been a pretty busy month for Harbor Springs’ Emily Kloss. The cross country season is always just getting underway for Kloss’ Rams, who seemingly always find themselves competing for conference, regional and even state championships. As the September schedule gets going once again for Kloss, the end of the month will have an unexpected addition. Kloss, in her 34th year of coaching within the Harbor Springs athletic program, will enter the Michigan High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame later this month. She’ll be inducted in Mount Pleasant on Sunday, Sept. 27. Many of those years were spent right alongside husband and former Harbor Springs coach, Mike Kloss, who was absolutely thrilled to hear Emily received the honor.“She has great care and passion for watching the kids develop,” Mike said. “She cares a lot about the sport, she’s in it 100 percent. She loves running, loves the kids and coaches she’s with. She deserves it and is still going strong.”She spent 31 years leading the Harbor Springs girls track and field program before turning the reins over to Alivia Murphy Richter, but is in her 26th year leading cross country, a program she started with Mike in 1999 as a club sport. Week 3 Picks: Am I good, or just lucky? Every kid on your team can have a positive experience. It could be that they ran five seconds faster or they ran the longest distance of their lives, or they made varsity. There’s so many ways to be successful.”Her own success coaching both sports runs deep. There’s the combined 17 conference championships and 16 regional titles. There’s two cross country state titles (2008, 2009) and two more runner-up finishes (2007, 2010), along with a track state title in 2015. She’s earned multiple coach of the year honors, including the National Coach of the Year from the National High School Athletics Coaches Association. Both Emily and Mike are also part of the Harbor Springs Athletic Hall of Fame. But you won’t find Emily reciting her long list of accomplishments any time soon, if ever. It’s always been about the kids and the relationships built.She loves that she gets to have an impact on each day in a kid’s life and coach with past athletes. “I’m pretty fortunate,” she said. “Alivia has been great and our coaching staff is all alumni from past years. None of them ran at the same time.
