RACHEL, W.Va. (WBOY) — Last Friday night, the North Marion Huskies looked to pull off the unthinkable, beating Fairmont Senior, something that the program hadn’t done in 23 years. The Huskies rolled into this game with lots of confidence, with an undefeated record in their first three games, and they defeated the Polar Bears in thrilling fashion, 29-25. The emotion of the victory is something that the program and Coach Hays will never forget.”I have had a couple of those throughout my career, personally. They probably have not experienced it as much because we have had some success in their early years, so there are not a lot of things that they haven’t been to. These guys that are seniors have been to the state finals game; they have beat Byrd, they’ve done some different things,” Hays said.
Harry Green Athlete of the Week: Ryder Moran The Huskies put on a defensive clinic on Friday night, and one player’s performance made a key difference. Colby VanGilder had five tackles, one QB hurry, a pick-six and a fumble recovery that ultimately led the Huskies to victory.”That pick-six was pretty incredible I’m not going to lie, but I’m glad I could force that one fumble and recover it, and make our team come down the field, and I mean we scored and won the game after that one,” VanGilder said.VanGilder and the Huskies football program have started the season with a 4-0 record and they want to focus on one game at a time and not get complacent as they look to make a deep postseason run this year”It’s a different team, and this team is pretty special in my opinion. I think we all know our roles, and I think we’ll all play joint together for the rest of the season,” VanGilder said.North Marion will be back in action on Friday at home as they take on Lincoln.Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media, Inc.
