England captain Harry Kane has disclosed that he played a round of golf with President Donald Trump about a year and a half ago. The 32-year-old forward is prepared for World Cup action on Saturday as England take on Norway in a bid to reach the semi-finals of the tournament. Kane remains firmly in the running for the Golden Boot as well, with six goals, just two behind Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe, who are both on eight.
Trump highlighted England’s performance after their impressive Azteca Stadium victory over Mexico over the weekend, praising Kane on social media. Now, Kane recalls their previous encounter on a golf course just over a year ago. Known for his love of golf and regarded as one of the best golfers on the England squad, Kane has cultivated strong ties with the United States, notably developing a long-standing rapport with Tom Brady.
“I played all right. We played about 18 months ago… he invited me to play when I was down in Palm Beach,” Kane told The Telegraph. “When the President invites you somewhere… it was a pretty surreal experience just to meet him and obviously play golf with him.”
“I think his golf is pretty good. I hope I can play golf as well as him when I’m his age, that’s for sure. It was a unique experience, and I was just grateful that he invited me down to play with him…” Kane added.
On Saturday, Kane will enjoy the support of Trump as England face Norway. While the President has admitted he isn’t the biggest soccer devotee, he remains aware of Kane’s talents with the ball at his feet. Yet the President’s golf prowess—especially at his age—appeared to surprise the England captain. Perhaps another round could be on the cards once the World Cup is wrapped up.
