Henderson: Breaking arm in England celebrations ‘not my finest hour’

England midfielder Jordan Henderson joked it was “not my finest hour” after suffering a broken arm during the celebrations for England’s World Cup last-16 victory over Mexico last weekend. The former Liverpool captain did not feature in the dramatic 3-2 win, yet he still found himself involved in the post-match festivities, getting booked and sustaining a serious injury by toppling over an advertising hoarding in front of England’s travelling supporters.
Henderson rejoined the England squad on Friday and was pictured watching training with a cast on his arm. The 36-year-old Brentford man had also taken part in the pre-match warm-up ahead of the quarter-final against Norway on Saturday night.
“It’s alright, thanks,” Henderson told ITV when asked about his arm. “Not my finest hour, but the main job was to go there and win and progress to the quarter-final, and we managed to do that, so that’s the main thing. It’s been a tough couple of days, but as soon as I came back to camp and saw the lads, we’ve got a great medical team, and I’m thankful for that. The doctors and surgeons in Kansas were amazing as well, so I’m very grateful for that, and I’m delighted to be part of the squad again today.”
Henderson has only appeared once for England at the World Cup so far, coming on as a late substitute in the 2-0 group-stage win over Panama. Nevertheless, he will remain with Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the remainder of the tournament. When asked if there was a possibility he might play if England advance further, Henderson responded: “We’ll cross that bridge if we come to it.”
