‘He’s Very Stubborn’ — College Football Insider Questions Dabo Swinney’s High-Stakes Clemson Gamble

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney finds himself squarely in the crosshairs of national scrutiny as he heads into the next season following a disappointing finish in 2025. In the aftermath of the Tigers’ Pinstripe Bowl defeat to the Penn State Nittany Lions, Swinney shook up his staff by parting ways with offensive coordinator Garrett Riley and bringing in Chad Morris to oversee the offense. He also has been highly active in the transfer market this offseason, though the wave of changes has been uneven across the roster. The departure of quarterback Cade Klubnik to the 2026 NFL Draft has left Clemson’s quarterback room thinner and less proven, raising the stakes for an offense that must prove it can improve.
Swinney’s approach to the transfer portal has drawn significant attention. Historically hesitant to embrace large-scale portal movement, he pivoted in the winter window by signing roughly 10 transfers, with the majority coming on the defensive side of the ball. The goal was to inject life into a retooling roster, but the offensive side of the ball has not shown similar improvement. Last season, Clemson averaged 27.2 points per game, a notable drop from the 34.7 points per game the team posted the year prior. The losses of Klubnik and offensive lineman Blake Miller to the NFL Draft have left the Tigers with four linemen who either lack experience or are returning from season-ending injuries. Despite this uncertainty, Swinney chose not to pursue a quarterback addition through the portal, even though the two-deep on Clemson’s roster currently features five quarterbacks who have accumulated just one career start between them.
That decision has drawn strong critique from college football observers and analysts. Chris Hummer, a well-connected insider, weighed in on the situation during a CBS Sports discussion. “Clemson is an interesting case,” he said. “In many ways, Dabo Swinney has embraced the modern era. They added double-digit transfers this year for the first time, and they completely reset the defense. He even held a memorable press conference that slammed Pete Golding and Ole Miss—classic Dabo.” Yet Hummer paused on the quarterback situation, noting the heavy pressure on Swinney to explain why the Tigers did not pursue a quarterback through the portal. “What does their quarterback situation look like, and why didn’t they go get a guy in the portal? I’m very curious how Dabo talks about that room because I think there’s a ton of pressure on him, and he can be stubborn. We’ll see how that goes,” Hummer said.
After spring practice, Clemson’s QB competition has narrowed to two hopefuls: redshirt junior Christopher Vizzina and freshman Tait Reynolds, with Vizzina holding the edge in the early competition. Vizzina joined Clemson as a redshirt in 2023 and has appeared in 14 games for the Tigers, including one start. His passing tally stands at 64 completions on 105 attempts for 596 yards, with four touchdowns and one interception. Reynolds, meanwhile, has the athleticism and potential to push for the starting job, and his development will be critical to the attack’s success if the offense is to rise back to Clemson’s historically high levels.
The path forward for Swinney hinges on more than just quarterback play. The offense must show marked improvement, and the coordinators he has installed—along with the reworked defensive depth—must deliver a balanced team capable of competing at a high level in a challenging schedule. The season’s success or failure will likely be judged not only by the quarterback’s growth but also by how effectively the offense can execute under the new coaching staff and how well the defense can sustain the intensity and production promised by a roster overhaul designed to rejuvenate the program.
