​MIAMI, Fla. – Quarterback Darian Mensah is the clear frontrunner to orchestrate the Miami Hurricanes’ offense, but how does the rest of the room compare to the rest of the nation?Moving forward, the program appears comfortable in developing what’s within rather than continuing to search through the transfer portal, according to Mario Cristobal at ACC Kickoff Media Day. Behind Mensah are Luke Nickel, Judd Anderson, Dereon Coleman, Joe Borchers, and Vinny Gonzalez.Pro Football Focus ranks the Hurricanes’ quarterback depth No. 7 ahead of the upcoming season. The following programs listed ahead:- No. 1: Oregon- No. 2: Ohio State- No. 3: Ole Miss- No. 4: Texas- No. 5: LSU- No. 6: Notre DameNickel is the projected backup to Mensah, as the first week of fall camp concludes. The redshirt freshman appeared in one game last season – No. 11, 2025, against the North Carolina State Wolfpack. He played in the final drive of a 41-7 win. Nickel was a four-star top-20 quarterback recruit from the 2025 high school graduating class.Anderson has a unique frame among the Hurricanes’ quarterback room: unofficially 6-7 feet tall and 230 pounds. The redshirt sophomore appeared in one game in the past two years with the program – Sept. 7, 2024, against the Florida A&M Rattlers. Anderson was a three-star recruit from the 2024 high school graduating class.Coleman is the new face around the Coral Gables program. He’s unofficially listed at 6-1 and 175 pounds, but appeared to have added muscle during the summer. Coleman was a four-star recruit in this year’s high school graduating class. The 19-year-old could work ahead to earning the starting job for the 2027 college football season.Borchers and Gonzalez are walk-ons.Nickel and Anderson are potential transfer candidates for other programs to poach in the next portal window. The Hurricanes will have to decide which to retain.Although Cristobal is confident in the familiar talent, if another star quarterback were to enter the portal, he won’t shut down the opportunity.Looking ahead, the program received verbal commits from five-star Israel Briggs (2027), three-star Knox Annis (2028), and CJ Cypher (2029).The Hurricanes have a promising quarterback room waiting its turn to shine. Ahead of the upcoming season, the second-stringer will have on-field opportunities in blowout games. Whoever claims the role will have a head start to be the Hurricanes’ starter next year.A clear depth chart will likely be announced near the end of fall camp.
