How Giants Can Secure Much-Needed Series Victory vs. Rockies

By admin — In News — August 16, 2026

Is there anything more embarrassing than dropping a series to the last-place team in the National League West? It’s hard to think of something worse than that, but the San Francisco Giants are on the verge of doing so.Thankfully, they salvaged yesterday’s game, 7-1, thanks to a huge offensive burst, most specifically from Drew Gilbert.Logan Webb did his job, but now it’s up to Blade Tidwell to finish the job.Sitting at 51-72, it comes as no surprise that the Giants are closer to last-place conversation than they are to the playoffs. At the end of the day, though, they need to keep winning the games they should win, and the Colorado Rockies certainly fall into that list of opponents.Tidwell earns his third start of the yearSunday, Aug. 16, will see Gabriel Hughes start for the Rockies. He’s a right-handed pitcher with a 0-4 record and a rather high 5.61 ERA, along with 31 strikeouts. On the other side, the Giants will have Blade Tidwell go out there to start. He’s 0-0 this season with a strong 2.78 ERA, but he only has 19 strikeouts in 2026.Obviously, Tidwell is not a traditional starter. The 25-year-old has a save this year, which shows just how all over the place he’s been in this rotation. The fellow right-handed pitcher has a rock-solid 1.10 WHIP, but that’s to be expected from someone who’s set to make just his third start of the season in his 11th appearance.Tidwell has gone at least five innings in each of his last two appearances, so he’s heading into this game with momentum on his side. He didn’t record a decision in either of those games, and the Giants happened to lose them both, but they did so by one run the first time around and then managed to lose by three in extra innings. Offense must stay hotIt’s crazy to think that scoring seven runs was the Giants’ best offensive output since the end of July. It was nearly three weeks since their offense was that impressive, but now it’s a matter of consistency. No one expects this team to score seven runs again, but at the same time, they’re playing the 49-74 Rockies. Last place is not a conversation that the Giants should be in, and they need that core trio of Drew Gilbert, Rafael Devers, and Bryce Eldridge to continue to contribute in big ways.
