How Rays turned Tim Beckham’s draft pick into Junior Caminero originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Tampa Bay Rays selected Tim Beckham with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2008 MLB Draft. That choice, in retrospect, became a bust in terms of immediate big-league impact. Yet if you trace the team’s steps, it ultimately connected to their current rising star, Junior Caminero. Beckham spent parts of seven seasons in the majors, suiting up for four clubs and never reaching the full potential that was anticipated when he went first overall. A pair of trades gradually reshaped his legacy into Caminero’s.
Beckham first found himself on the move at the 2017 trade deadline, when the Rays sent the shortstop to the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for a minor league right-hander named Tobias Myers. Then, in November 2021, the Rays dealt Myers to the Cleveland Guardians for Caminero. Caminero arrived in the Rays organization at just 18 years old, having posted a .914 OPS in the Dominican Summer League. “He intrigued the Rays with the way he made hard, frequent contact,” wrote The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal in a recent feature. “But he didn’t intrigue them that much. The Rays, according to officials with both clubs who were granted anonymity for their candor, asked the Guardians for other players first.”
Both the Beckham miss and Caminero’s eventual arrival illustrate the humbling, often unpredictable nature of evaluating talent. Instead of boasting about the Caminero deal, Rays officials point to another, seemingly minor trade in which they sacrificed a future All-Star—left-hander Cristopher Sánchez, whom they sent to the Philadelphia Phillies for infielder Curtis Mead in November 2019. It’s a reminder that the baseball gods can be oddly balanced: the Rays whiffed on Beckham but hit with Caminero.
All’s well that ends well in the end, as the current prospect filigree around Caminero offers more promise for the Rays than Beckham’s tenure ever did. The dynamic of how a high-profile misstep can lead to a later, brighter payoff remains a talking point for the organization as it continues to navigate the complex landscape of talent evaluation and asset accumulation.
