How should England line-up against Norway? Our writers pick their XIs for World Cup quarter-final

England are preparing for a quarter-final showdown with Norway at the World Cup, a clash that promises to be enthralling after their testing night in Mexico City that helped fuel hopes of lifting the trophy. Thomas Tuchel’s side navigated a demanding route to the last eight and now face Erling Haaland and his teammates for a spot in the semi-finals. Tuchel faces a number of selection dilemmas, not least whether Reece James is ready to return at right-back to sharpen the options, and whether Dan Burn can regain a starting berth after a strong impact from the bench. There is also the question of whether Anthony Gordon should retain his place on the left, or whether changes are needed to freshen things up.
Our writers have weighed up England’s strongest XI for the quarter-final, bearing in mind that fitness will dictate the final call and that drifting from the XI that secured a dramatic last-16 win in Mexico would be unwise. One guaranteed alteration is the mandatory replacement for Jarrel Quansah following his red card and one-match ban. James is edging towards full fitness after a two-week hamstring lay-off, but he cannot simply slot straight back into action, especially with Haaland looming as a major threat. With that in mind, the choice at right-back narrows to Djed Spence and Ezri Konsa. Spence struggled when he started against DR Congo and showed more form off the bench in Mexico, though he did finish the Mexico game at right-back. Konsa, fresh from concluding that match at right-back, deserves the chance to start there on Saturday.
Beyond that, the XI should remain largely unchanged, in my view. Having failed to come off the bench against Mexico, Marcus Rashford is expected to play a decisive role in the latter stages, but Anthony Gordon has performed well enough to justify keeping his place. Aside from fitness considerations, there is a strong case that the rest of the squad should remain intact, with Tuchel confident in nearly all of his options to deliver again on the big stage.
Considering the threat posed by Erling Haaland, it makes sense to deploy John Stones and Dan Burn at centre-back. Stones brings World Cup–seasoned understanding of Haaland’s tendencies, while Burn’s physical presence should help blunt the Norwegian’s impact. The pair at centre-back, however, reduces pace in the middle, so Ezri Konsa should move to the right and Nico O’Reilly should remain at left-back to provide width as Norway look to exploit space on the flanks to feed Haaland.
Norway are not solely defined by Haaland, and Tuchel will be mindful of their other threats as he finalises his selection. The aim is to balance the defensive solidity needed to withstand Haaland’s danger with enough pace and width to counter Norway’s approach. In short, expect a disciplined, tightly wired England team, with selective changes aimed at preserving energy from the grind in Mexico while ensuring the defence can cope with Haaland and the Norwegian attack in the biggest test yet.
