It probably hasn’t been the start Detroit Tigers fans have been hoping for when it comes to the returns from the Tarik Skubal and Casey Mize trades. With Brady Smith placed on the injured list Thursday night by the West Michigan Whitecaps, that makes three pitchers from the two trade-deadline deals who are sidelined, joining righthander River Ryan and lefthander Kash Mayfield.Smith, a 21-year-old righthander who with Ryan and outfielder Zyhir Hope arrived in the Skubal trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers, left his start Saturday after just five batters, and was shaking his right arm before he was checked out by a trainer and walked off the mound at LMCU Ballpark in Comstock Park.Ryan, 28, who was rehabbing from a hamstring injury at the time of the trade, is on the injured list at Triple-A Toledo, but is getting closer to competition, Tigers manager AJ Hinch said last week, and has started to throw bullpens. He remains a possibility to help the Tigers down the stretch. Mayfield, 21, has yet to make his Tigers organizational debut after the Whitecaps placed him on the injured list Aug. 11. He’s been dealing with a hamstring injury.Mayfield, a first-round draft pick in 2024, came over to the Tigers from the San Diego Padresin the Mize deal, along with 27-year-old starter Jackson Wolf. Mayfield, 21, hasn’t pitched since July 24 with High-A Fort Wayne, a Padres affiliate.Ryan (No. 4), Mayfield (No. 8) and Smith (No. 10) are among the Tigers’ top 10 prospects, according to MLB Pipeline.Among the prospects from the two trades who have made their debuts, here is they have fared in their short time in the Tigers organization:▶ Smith: In two starts — one abbreviated because of injury — he’s allowed two earned runs on three hits and four walks in 6.1 innings. He’s struck out five.▶ Hope: The headliner in the Skubal return who recently moved up to No. 39 among Baseball America’s top 100 prospects, Hope is at Double-A Erie. He’s hitting .160 in the early going (50 at-bats), with a pair of home runs and nine RBIs. The 21-year-old has five hits in his last 11 at-bats, spanning three games, entering Friday, with three runs scored.▶ Wolf: In two appearances with the Mud Hens, including one start, Wolf has allowed three runs on six hits in eight innings pitched, with seven strikeouts and a walk. He pitched four one-hit, shutout innings in his organizational debut Aug. 9.The Tigers also added prospects as players to be named later in earlier deals for outfielder Jahmai Jones (getting lefthander Jojo Ingrassia from the Boston Red Sox) and catcher Jake Rogers (landing righthander and Hillsdale College product Zane Barnhart from the Baltimore Orioles). Here is a look at how they’ve started, entering Friday:▶ Ingrassia: In two relief appearances for the Whitecaps, the 24-year-old lefty has allowed two runs on four hits and two walks in 5.1 innings, striking out seven.▶ Barnhart: The 24-year-old righthander has made six appearances for Erie, tossing 7.1
