Ian Seymour Dominates Yankees as Rays Even Series at Tropicana Field

The Tampa Bay Rays snapped their skid and evened the series with the New York Yankees after a standout pitching performance at Tropicana Field, besting their AL East rival 3-1. Here’s the essential rundown from today’s game.
After consistently excellent outings on the mound, the former reliever-turned-starter delivered a career-high performance Tuesday night against a division foe, fanning 12 Yankees over 5.1 innings. The dominant showing was nearly flawless, with the lone blemish coming on a 3-run homer by Ben Rice in the third inning. Aside from that blast, he controlled the game, delivering exactly what the Rays needed to halt their losing streak. Notably, he became the first Rays pitcher since Tyler Glasnow in 2023 to strike out 12 or more batters in five innings.
The Rays’ bullpen picked up where the starter left off, with four relievers contributing shutout innings to preserve the victory. Closer Bryan Baker finished the job, earning his 24th save of the season and helping to secure the win.
Offensively, the Rays got a timely jolt from Yandy Díaz, who looked more like his old self after a rough stretch. Diaz, who had departed a few weeks earlier with a shoulder issue, had slumped to 2-for-24 with seven strikeouts over his last several games. But he turned things around against the Yankees, going 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs in the contest. The performance helped Díaz lift his batting average to .319, climbing back into the conversation at third place in MLB for the season batting average and erasing some of the damage from his earlier slump.
Additionally, Hunter Feduccia and Victor Méndez Jr. contributed with home runs of their own, providing crucial runs and adding pop from the bottom portion of the lineup. Their homers, paired with Díaz’s offensive spark, gave Kevin Cash and the Rays the variety they needed from a lineup that had endured a few quiet games. It’s a reminder that depth in the order can be a decisive factor in a tight division race, particularly as the Rays aim to preserve momentum in the series against their Bronx rivals.
Richie Palacios also delivered a notable performance, collecting two hits, scoring twice, and driving in a run. His production contributed to the Rays’ ability to push across the necessary runs and maintain control throughout the game.
Looking ahead, the Rays will head back to the diamond on Wednesday, intent on taking advantage of the series atmosphere against the Yankees at Tropicana Field. Shane McClanahan (7-5, 3.05 ERA) is slated to start for Tampa Bay, while New York will counter with right-hander Gerrit Cole (3-3, 4.01 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 PM EST, and fans will be hoping for more strong pitching, timely offense, and bullpen coverage that can carry the Rays to another win in the series. This performance not only halted the recent slide but also reinforced the Rays’ ability to lean on both their starting rotation and their depth in the bullpen as they push toward the postseason.
