​Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams has been discussed as an MVP candidate plenty this offseason. People like “First Things First’s” Danny Parkins have been predicting that Williams will be in the conversation. It makes sense after the growth we saw from Williams after one season in Ben Johnson’s offense. He threw for more passing yards and touchdowns than he did in his rookie season. Still, it wasn’t a perfect season from Williams by any means. His completion percentage declined from 62.5% in 2024 to 58.1% last season. Head coach Ben Johnson recently said that Williams has been working to improve in that metric and noted that he is trending upward in that regard. On the latest edition of ESPN’s “First Take,” Mike Tannenbaum had a caveat for Williams to enter MVP territory. He stated that if Williams can improve his completion percentage, he would be an MVP candidate without question.I would have to agree. There have been health issues with Williams’ receivers in the past. Just last year, Rome Odunze missed significant time due to a bone stress fracture in his foot. Luther Burden is expected to miss all of the preseason with a groin injury he sustained during training camp. Still, it’s not all on the receivers. Williams needs to be willing to accept taking the easy plays when they are available. When he needs to carry the team with those home run plays, he should. However, he doesn’t need to force things and look for the explosive plays every down of every game. If Williams can learn how to do that, I think his completion percentage will go up and his chances of winning the MVP will too. The pieces are all there for Williams. He’ll have another year in Johnson’s offense in 2026. Plus, while I don’t think the blame can be placed entirely on the receivers, it will help him if Odunze and Burden stay healthy. Colston Loveland will be around too to continue being Williams’ safety valve when needed. Additionally, the Bears being in a position as a contender will help Williams as well. If you look at the players who have won the MVP in the past, they have all been on teams contending for a Super Bowl. Last year, Matthew Stafford won the award, and the Los Angeles Rams were a couple of plays away from reaching the Super Bowl. Josh Allen won the MVP in 2024, and the Buffalo Bills lost by three points, or they would’ve been in the Super Bowl. I could go through every MVP of the last 10 years or so. Nearly all of them have been on teams in a position to compete for or win a Super Bowl. Being in that kind of position helps out an MVP candidate. Few things are that simple, but if Williams can clean up his game in that area, it could increase his odds of winning the MVP. He is in one of the best situations with the Bears to do so.
