‘If Donald Trump can do it…’ Harry Redknapp slams ‘scandalous’ FIFA World Cup decision

Harry Redknapp voiced frustration over FIFA’s ruling that England defender Jarell Quansah receive a two-match suspension, a punishment that followed his red card for serious foul play late in England’s 3-2 win over Mexico in the World Cup Round of 16. England, no doubt, would have preferred that Quansah’s ban remained at one game, especially after the recent drama surrounding Folarin Balogun. Balogun’s one-game sanction in the previous round had been suspended following a controversial intervention by Donald Trump, who spoke with FIFA president Gianni Infantino.
Infantino asserted that his discussions with Trump did not influence FIFA’s decision, but the incident drew widespread attention nonetheless. In a bold and highly publicized move, Redknapp has urged the British government to emulate Trump’s approach and press for a reconsideration of Quansah’s sanction. He even floated the idea that Prime Minister Keir Starmer should contact Infantino to ask for the ban to be overturned, arguing that if a former U.S. president can intervene, Britain should be able to secure a similar outcome.
“This is scandalous, really. It’s a big disappointment for the lad,” Redknapp said. “If Donald Trump can step in, why can’t we?”
However, the English FA has been informed that an appeal against FIFA’s decision cannot be lodged ahead of the quarter-final match against Norway. As for the lineup, England manager Thomas Tuchel appears likely to deploy Djed Spence at right-back on Saturday unless Reece James, who is nursing a hamstring injury sustained against Ghana in the group stage, is deemed fit to play. James’ return would be a welcome relief for the Chelsea captain and a potential adjustment to the defensive setup.
The implications of the Quansah suspension extend beyond a single match, affecting England’s defensive options as they brace for a crucial knockout clash. With Spence favored to start at right-back and James’ status uncertain, Tuchel faces decisions about how to structure the back line and whether additional reshuffling will be needed to balance defense and attack against Norway. The situation also underscores the broader debate about how disciplinary decisions are handled at the World Cup level and the extent to which external figures and high-profile interventions can influence outcomes, a topic that continues to provoke discussion among players, coaches, and fans alike.
