This has seen VVS Laxman stepping in as stand-in head coach whenever Gautam Gambhir’s commitments elsewhere have clashed with a T20I assignment. As a result, both men have ended up with genuinely substantial bodies of work in the shortest format. Laxman, who also heads the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence, has taken charge for tours of Ireland, New Zealand, Australia, Zimbabwe and South Africa, along with two separate Asian Games campaigns.Gambhir, meanwhile, has held the full-time role since July 2024, overseeing India’s T20I side through two ICC World Cup campaigns and a string of bilateral series. With both coaches now holding championship golf around their necks, it is worth laying their numbers side by side to see exactly how their stints compare.MORE: Gambhir reportedly wants 32-year-old India pacer considered for New Zealand Tests BCCI/Creimas VVS Laxman’s T20I record as India’s stand-in head coachAssignmentYearResultMatchesWinsWin%T20I series vs Ireland2022Won 2-022100%T20I leg of New Zealand tour2022Won 1-0 (1 win, 1 washout, 1 tied)2150%%Asian Games2023Gold medal (2 wins, 1 no result)3266.67%T20I series vs Australia2023Won 4-15480%T20I series vs Zimbabwe2024Won 4-15480%T20I series vs South Africa2024Won 3-14375%T20I series vs Zimbabwe2026Won 3-033100%Asian Games2026Gold medal (2 wins, 1 wash-out)22100%Total252184%*Matches that have been completed have been considered in the tableAcross his various stints as head coach, Laxman has won eight of nine tournaments or series in charge, with his only blemish coming in an ODI assignment rather than the T20I format itself. His overall record across all these stints stands at 21 wins, three losses and four matches with no result.
