A fortnight ago, the Bangladesh Cricket Board appeared to have settled the question by publicly inviting broadcasters to bid for the series. That progress has now stalled. According to Cricbuzz, the BCB has paused the media rights process entirely and halted the release of the Expression of Interest document, an abrupt reversal that has reopened doubts about whether the six-match series will take place at all.The timing is telling. The EOI document was scheduled to become available from July 2, with bids due by July 22, and the sudden freeze suggests the board no longer possesses the certainty it projected only days earlier about hosting its neighbours.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThe BCB had announced a full white-ball itinerary comprising three ODIs and three T20Is. India were due to arrive on Friday, August 28, with the ODIs scheduled for September 1, 3 and 6, followed by the T20Is on September 9, 12 and 13.The India series headed the BCB’s media rights tender, listed alongside the West Indies’ two-Test tour in 2026 and the visits of England and Pakistan in 2027. Its prominence at the top of that list underlined how commercially vital the fixture is to Bangladesh cricket.Embed Twitter FeedBCB media committee chairman Asif Rabbani had been bullish only weeks ago. “We are confident about hosting India as per schedule. We have floated the EOI for media rights for the next few home series, including India’s tour, and are hoping for a good response from prospective bidders,” he said.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThe BCCI, however, has consistently declined to commit. Cricbuzz reported that the Indian board remained non-committal when contacted, and its position has never depended on cricketing considerations alone. This tour was originally scheduled for last year before being postponed amid diplomatic tension between the two nations, following the student movement that ousted the Awami League government in July 2024. Bangladesh’s interim administration subsequently refused to let its team travel to India for the T20 World Cup, citing security concerns. The landscape has shifted since. Bangladesh’s general election brought the Bangladesh Nationalist Party to power, and the new government has moved to repair relations, with India resuming tourist visas for Bangladeshi nationals on June 28 after a two-year suspension.AdvertisementAdve
