Injuries forcing Tennessee to shuffle starting offensive line ahead of Auburn

Veteran guard Wendell Moe went down just a couple of snaps into the game against the Longhorns, and we learned last night that he’s likely done for the season. That’s the second big blow to Tennessee’s offense, following the loss of tight end Ethan Davis. That’s two veterans that were key to Tennessee’s run blocking scheme, both steadying presences that have been there and done that. Our first look at the next men up in those equations was not a fun one. Tennessee couldn’t generate any sort of push against Texas in the run game and ended up giving up ten sacks on the day. All of those weren’t on the offensive line, but freshman quarterback Faizon Brandon was left rattled and running on nearly every pass attempt. Now looking ahead to Auburn, a similar lineup will hit the field. West Virginia transfer Donavan Haslam will likely become a starter at right guard. Haslam’s 330 pound frame will give Tennessee more power in the run scheme, while likely a little less agility and movement ability. Sham Umarov, who has started each game for Tennessee at right guard, is listed as questionable for the Auburn game. He’s a natural thought to take over for Moe, but what if Umarov can’t go? Elarbee could plug in Nic Moore, who has been working at center behind Sam Pendleton. Moore started the opener in Pendleton’s place due to his suspension. Could any other options emerge there? Tennessee could always put LSU transfer Ory Williams at right tackle and kick Jesse Perry to a guard spot. Williams hasn’t played much at all this year though, despite coming to Knoxville as being though of as the solution at right tackle. It just hasn’t come together yet, but Tennessee could be forced to try things out on Saturday.Tennessee has younger options like Gabriel Osenda, Kamari Blair and Ed Baker. There are also sophomores like Jeremias Heard and Antonio Ogumoro. Elarbee is searching for his best five once again, but the depth has also taken a hit. Everyone is one more slot up from finding the field now with Moe out, so it’s possible we see some fresh faces out there soon. After the Texas performance, that may not be the worst thing in the world.
