​Saturday, Oct. 3, marks homecoming for Iowa State football and a final sendoff for longtime athletics director Jamie Pollard.During the Sept. 29 episode of the “Cyclone Coaches Corner,” hosted by Iowa State athletics play-by-play commentator John Walters, Pollard confirmed that the homecoming game against West Virginia will be his final home game as athletic director and his last day in office.”We’ve mentioned this is your final coaches’ show,” Walters said. “This is your final week in office. What are you working on this week, and how emotional is it to be in the office this week?””It hasn’t been as emotional as I thought,” Pollard responded. “I’m sure it will be Saturday night when we clean out my office, when you start taking everything down off the walls and start packing it up.”In July, Pollard first announced his retirement, which would be effective on June 30, 2027, or whenever Iowa State hired his successor — whichever came first.Iowa State launched a nationwide search for Pollard’s replacement this fall. The university has not yet named Pollard’s successor or an interim replacement. “My kids asked if they could help (pack) and I said no, because these are memories and I don’t want it to just be like, let’s just stuff all the stuff in boxes and roll,” Pollard said. “So that will probably be the emotional moment, because it hasn’t been so far. It’s been prolonged enough that you’ve had your moments, but it’s been in little doses. But Saturday night will seem real.”Pollard also confirmed it was the final week for senior associate athletic director Calli Sanders, who has been at Iowa State since 2003.Pollard did not immediately respond to an inquiry from the Register for comment.On the show, Pollard shared some thoughts on colleagues and coaches he’s worked with. He mentioned that more than a month ago, he compiled a list of “seven or eight things” that he wanted to complete with his staff before his departure. According to Pollard, those tasks have been completed and now it’s just finishing the remainder of his time at his post.”Now it’s just down to writing some final notes to people,” Pollard said. “Kind of just hanging out and talking to people and just appreciating what you have, while you still have it for another three days.”Eugene Rapay covers Iowa State athletics for the Des Moines Register.
