​Tim Howard has seen enough. The U.S. men’s national team legend is ready to throw Cavan Sullivan into the deep end.”Cavan Sullivan needs to play nearly every [USMNT] game between now and 2030,” Howard said last week on the Unfiltered Soccerpodcast with Landon Donovan. “Play him now. Let him make his mistakes. Let him bleed into the team so that in 2030 at the World Cup, we have a 20-year-old who’s like, ‘Give me the ball. Give me the ball on the biggest stage.'”Two years ago, Sullivan made his MLS debut at 14 years and 293 days old, breaking Freddy Adu’s record as the youngest player in league history. He wasn’t ready to play significant minutes in MLS then. But this season, at 16, he’s shown he’s not only ready — he’s arguably been the Philadelphia Union’s most influential player.What Sullivan has done this season before his 17th birthday is something extraordinary.According to American Soccer Analysis’ goals added metric, a catch-all measure of a player’s overall effectiveness, Sullivan ranks 27th across the entire MLS this season. At an age most players are toiling in the youth ranks, Sullivan is already one of the league’s best 30 players.His productivity sees him compare favorably to Alphonso Davies during his age-16 season in MLS. Sullivan ranks ahead of Zavier Gozo, who just made a $15 million move to the Premier League.Across all competitions, Sullivan has five goals and 11 assists this season. Again, for a 16-year-old, this is extremely not normal. Sullivan also passes the eye test. Watch the Union play and he’ll almost always be at the heart of the team’s attack. His confidence with the ball is readily apparent. The teenager isn’t shy about taking players on, using his skill and quick burst to proactively spark attacks.Playing extended first-team minutes this season has allowed Sullivan to refine parts of his game that don’t come as naturally as his desire to push forward in attack.”We know about his talent. It’s incredible the things that he can do, the mentality that he has. But he can’t only play when the ball is at his feet,” Union interim head coach Ryan Richter said earlier this month.”He’s going to have to find the game in different ways sometimes. You have to position yourself for second balls. You have to recover in the game. You have to find the ball in in the middle of the field in tight windows and turn and make plays from there.”Sullivan is getting a real education in MLS. For a player his age, perhaps that is all he really needs right now. His time with the USMNT is obviously coming, but does that time have to be now?Though it’s rare for a player his age to represent the USMNT, it’s not entirely without precedent.
