It’s confirmed: Chennai to host first-ever overseas BBL game in December

Australia’s T20 franchise competition, the Big Bash League (BBL), is set to begin its 2026-27 season with a historic match in India at Chennai’s M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in December, announced Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Friday. The declaration came as Albanese and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrapped Modi’s three-day visit to Australia, with both leaders unveiling a pathway to stronger sporting ties between the two nations.
Cricket Australia confirmed that Chennai will host the BBL 16 opener, featuring the Melbourne Renegades against the Perth Scorchers, with the Renegades designated as the home side. This fixture will mark the first time a Big Bash League match is staged outside Australia and is slated for December 12. The decision underscores a broader effort to broaden the reach of Australia’s premier domestic T20 competition while strengthening bilateral sports ties between Australia and India.
In conjunction with the match announcement, Albanese and Modi introduced the Roadmap on Sport Cooperation, a framework designed to deepen collaboration in sport between the two countries. An official media release highlighted that the roadmap emphasizes practical priority areas, including capability building, technology, and research, all aimed at reinforcing sport as a core element of the bilateral relationship. “Australia and India are united by our love and passion for sport. This sports roadmap will focus on practical priority areas such as capability building, technology and research to strengthen this cornerstone of our bilateral relationship. I am excited to expand cooperation with India on sport, which not only brings joy to Australians but boosts trade, tourism and investment,” Albanese stated.
Support for the move comes in part from the Australian Government and the Centre for Australia-India Relations (CAIR) through a Maitri grant. The Maitri Program is designed to deepen ties with India by promoting collaboration in education, research, and policymaking, reflecting a broader initiative to foster closer engagement with India on multiple fronts, including sport.
At the event, Alistair Dobson, Cricket Australia’s Executive General Manager of the BBL, called the decision a landmark moment for Australian cricket and the league. “Today is a huge moment for the Big Bash Leagues and for Australian cricket. Chennai is home to some of the most passionate cricket fans on the planet, and we can’t wait to bring the BBL to the MA Chidambaram Stadium,” Dobson remarked, underscoring the enthusiasm within Australia for expanding the league’s footprint internationally.
TNCA President TJ Srinivasaraj similarly welcomed the partnership, describing it as a historic occasion. “The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) is privileged to partner with Cricket Australia in this landmark occasion of staging the first-ever Big Bash League match in India,” Srinivasaraj said, highlighting the significance of the collaboration for the region and for cricket fans across India.
The marquee match, Melbourne Renegades versus Perth Scorchers, is scheduled for Saturday, December 12, 2026, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The kickoff is set for 2:40 pm India Standard Time (IST), which corresponds to 8:10 pm Australian Eastern Daylight Time (AEDT). The dual timing will help maximize visibility and reach for fans, sponsors, and broadcasters across both nations, ensuring the event receives substantial attention in both markets and aligns with broader efforts to promote the sport’s transnational appeal.
Beyond the match itself, the partnership signals a strategic aim to leverage sports as a conduit for broader bilateral engagement. By bringing a high-profile Australian league match to India, organizers hope to tap into India’s vast cricket-loving audience, stimulate tourism, and showcase potential for enhanced sporting exchanges, coaching collaborations, and cross-border youth development programs. The collaboration also reflects a growing trend of major international leagues exploring opportunities to host games abroad, expanding their fan bases while contributing to the local economy and the sport’s development.
In summary, the BBL’s foray into India marks a pivotal moment for both cricketing nations. The Chennai opener will not only inaugurate a new era for the Big Bash League by bringing top-tier Australian franchise cricket to Indian soil but will also symbolize the strengthening of sport as a mutual bridge—one that promises enhanced cooperation, shared innovation, and enduring benefits for players, fans, and the broader sports ecosystem in Australia and India.
