Add Jaden Akins to the list of names to watch of players the Knicks can consider for a two-way roster spot from their Las Vegas Summer League team.Akins, the 6-foot-4 guard who went undrafted in the 2025 NBA Draft before spending a season with the Detroit Pistons’ G-League Motor City Cruise team, had his breakout Summer League performance in the Knicks’ 87-77 loss to the Golden State Warriors on Thursday.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThe 23-year-old scoring guard scored 21 points in 25 minutes off the bench and shot 9-of-20 from the field and three-of-eight from deep for his best performance of the Knicks’ first four games of Summer League play. Akins missed both Monday’s matchup against the Detroit Pistons and Saturday’s loss to the San Antonio Spurs. He scored just two points in 25 minutes in the Las Vegas opener against the Brooklyn Nets.Akins, however, made a statement on Thursday, as the Knicks got little else from the rest of their Vegas squad — just nine points on 3-of-12 shooting from the field and one-of-seven shooting from 3-point range from Pacome Dadiet. 2026 Second-round pick Tyler Nickel shot three-of-six from deep for nine points and the bruising big man Liam Robbins added 13 points and nine rebounds. But Thursday belonged to Akins — at least what was left of it after the Warriors had their way.Golden State’s got a gem in Yaxel Lendeborg, the highly-touted lottery pick they selected 11th overall in the June NBA Draft who finished with three points, six rebounds and six assists in a standout defensive performance. Second-round pick Jack Kayil got the start but finished with just four points on two-of-nine shooting from the field. Kayil finished with five rebounds, four assists and a steal but missed all seven of his attempts from behind the arc.The Knicks have one more minimum contract slot available beneath the second apron to sign free agents in an effort to bolster the reserves around the championship core of Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, OG Anunoby, Mikal Bridges and Josh Hart. They also have until Oct. 31 to pick up the team option on the third year of Dadiet’s four-year rookie contract. Dadiet, the first-round pick the Knicks selected 25th overall in the 2024 NBA Draft, is scheduled to make roughly $3 million this season — enough space for another minimum salary player — with a pay raise north of $5 million in Year 4.The Knicks must also make a decision on Dillon Jones, who won back-to-back championships in Oklahoma City and New York in his first two NBA seasons and was an invaluable member of head coach Mike Brown’s brain trust off the court.
