The first overall pick in 2014, veteran edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney could see his remarkable 12-year NFL career come to a close with his head held high. Over those 12 seasons, Clowney piled up 66.5 sacks, 450 tackles, 120 tackles for loss, and a defensive score from a pick-six, contributing to stints with seven different franchises. Yet after delivering an 8.5-sack season for the Dallas Cowboys, it’s quite possible we’ll witness the 33-year-old terrorizing quarterbacks again in 2026. The burning question remains: which teams should be lining up to sign him in free agency?
Where Clowney lands will naturally depend on which teams show interest, and here are five clubs that have solid reasons to make a move. Whether they’re Super Bowl contenders or teams in full rebuild mode, these clubs could use an upgrade on the edge.
You wouldn’t think a franchise that traded for Micah Parsons last offseason would be desperate for edge help, but that’s where the Green Bay Packers find themselves. The Packers totaled 36 sacks in 2025, tying for the 12th-fewest in the league, and they shipped Rashan Gary to the Cowboys before free agency. With Lukas Van Ness stepping into a bigger role, he still managed just 1.5 sacks and 3 tackles for loss in his third year. While rookie fourth-round pick Dani Dennis-Sutton is an intriguing prospect, he’s more of a raw power rusher who needs time to refine his technique. Clowney would immediately raise the floor of Green Bay’s defensive line and provide an experienced voice to mentor the youngsters as they develop. He’d give the Packers a reliable veteran presence and a stabilizing force opposite whatever young talent they deploy.
Sticking in the NFC North, the Detroit Lions have endured a run of bad luck with injuries in recent seasons, especially on the edge in 2024 and at cornerback in 2025. They’re still seeking a long-term partner for star edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson and just lost Al-Quadin Muhammad in free agency after an 11-sack breakout season. Although the Lions hope second-round pick Derrick Moore can become the answer opposite Hutchinson, adding Clowney would take immediate pressure off the Michigan product and provide a proven rotational option and veteran presence. Regardless of Moore’s trajectory, the Lions cannot afford another defensive downturn while they’re positioned to compete for Super Bowl runs. If Moore hits the ground running, Clowney could serve as a powerful veteran influence, contributing as a steady rotational force and providing crucial injury insurance.
Turning to the West Coast, the San Francisco 49ers have endured their share of misfortune in recent years, from Dre Greenlaw’s heartbreaking Super Bowl sideline injury to Christian McCaffrey’s injury-plagued 2025 campaign. Kyle Shanahan’s squad has shown time and again that it’s willing to add glue players who can stabilize the lineup and push a defense forward. Clowney’s presence could help provide a reliable edge option behind the starting unit and add depth to a defensive front that relies on tempo and versatility. If health and chemistry align, he could contribute in meaningful ways as a rotational pass rusher who can deliver pressure and stop-the-run value when called upon.
The home of the old guard in the East could also present a compelling case. The offense of a team with a strong quarterback and a dynamic roster benefits from a pressure-package that can force mistakes and extend drives. Clowney’s ability to bend around tackles and crash the pocket could help unlock a more aggressive front-seven approach. A team that emphasizes a balanced, complementary pass rush—one that pairs Clowney’s veteran savvy with younger, explosive talent—could maximize his late-prime productivity and extend his career through a few more impactful seasons.
None of this is a guarantee, of course. The market for Clowney will hinge on fit, financials, and opportunity. But five teams—Green Bay, Detroit, San Francisco, and two other contenders with similar edge needs—could realistically pursue him as they assemble rosters capable of contending for a playoff run. If Clowney does land with one of these teams, expect him to contribute as a high-floor veteran whose experience, leadership, and on-field versatility could stabilize defenses and help a championship hopeful navigate the gauntlet of a demanding schedule.
