Jalen Nailor’s performance will be good barometer of Klint Kubiak

As the chief offensive play caller, how Klint Kubiak maximizes wide receiver Jalen Nailor will speak volumes about the head coach’s prowess. The Las Vegas Raiders signed Nailor to a three-year, $35.03 million contract, with $23 million guaranteed and $18 million at signing. The deal marks a significant return home for the Nevada native, though it wasn’t the most exorbitant price tag for a receiver, averaging $11.67 million per year. That figure is steep for a player who has yet to top 445 receiving yards in his four-year NFL career, but it reflects the Raiders’ conviction in his potential.
The contract numbers suggest the Raiders won a bidding war, and there is reason to believe Nailor’s price was driven higher by multiple suitors. The Athletic reported in early March that more than 10 teams were eyeing Nailor as free agency opened, and when several franchises chase a player, the price can escalate. Las Vegas did step up, and Nailor capitalized on the moment.
From a statistical standpoint, Nailor’s 2025 season with the Raiders included 17 games, eight starts, 53 targets, 29 receptions for 444 yards and four touchdowns, along with two rushing attempts for 13 yards. Over his career (2022–25), he has appeared in 55 games with 16 starts, accumulating 114 targets, 69 receptions, 1,066 yards, and 11 touchdowns, plus five carries for nine yards. Nailor described his role as a versatile asset, saying, “Just trying to be a guy that can play all over the field. I think Coach (Klint) Kubiak does a great job of just getting his playmakers the ball. It’s not just myself, but we’ve got Tre (Tucker), we’ve got Brock (Bowers), we’ve got those guys that can do multiple things in the offense, and that’s what’s going to separate us as a unit, just to have guys move around. You never know where they’re going to be at on a single play.”
Standing 5-foot-11 and 199 pounds, Nailor brings a degree of speed beyond what his 4.50-second 40-yard dash at the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine would suggest. A Michigan State product, Nailor was selected in the sixth round (191th overall) by the Minnesota Vikings, where he spent his first four seasons on a rookie contract. He arrives in Las Vegas eager to prove the Raiders’ investment is well earned, and the onus to demonstrate that value falls squarely on Kubiak’s shoulders.
Kubiak is recognized as a play-calling head coach who has built efficient, potent offenses, including a Super Bowl-winning unit with the Seattle Seahawks. It stands to reason that Las Vegas turned to him after parting ways with Pete Carroll. In assessing how Nailor gets the ball into his hands and how the offense capitalizes on his speed, the responsibility rests with Kubiak to devise schemes that exploit Nailor’s strengths and create opportunities for him to exceed his previous career highs.
The challenge for Kubiak is not merely to feature Nailor, but to design an offense that uses him to his fullest potential as a multi-dimensional threat. Nailor himself notes the value of movement and flexibility within the playbook, emphasizing that the offense should keep defenses guessing about alignments and assignments. If Kubiak can orchestrate formations and routes that leverage Nailor’s speed and agility—while also incorporating other playmakers like Tucker and Bowers—the Raiders can create more favorable matchups and open seams for big plays.
In practice, maximizing Nailor will involve rapid, varied inputs: quick-hitting routes to exploit soft zones, deep shots when safeties cheat toward the line, jet sweeps and misdirection to stress linebackers, and tailored packages that place Nailor in motion to force mismatches against linebackers or safeties. It will require precise timing, a diverse playbook, and the confidence to deploy Nailor in multiple roles—split wide, in the slot, in motion pre-snap, or from a backfield alignment. The success of this endeavor will hinge on Kubiak’s ability to balance Nailor’s speed with the rest of the offense, ensuring that material gains are sustainable and that Nailor’s production translates into meaningful wins for Las Vegas.
Ultimately, Nailor’s impact will be a testament to Kubiak’s coaching acumen as much as to Nailor’s own speed and playmaking ability. If the offense can consistently put Nailor in advantageous situations and diversify his usage, the Raiders could see a marked uptick in explosive plays and overall efficiency, validating the substantial contract and signaling a promising chapter for both Nailor and the Las Vegas offense.
