Jayden Adams, the 25-year-old South African midfielder who represented his country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, has passed away. Entertainment Weekly reported that Gayton McKenzie, South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, announced Adams’ death on Saturday, July 11. Al Jazeera cited Reuters in noting that no official cause of death had been released.
Adams played for Mamelodi Sundowns and was a member of South Africa’s national team, Bafana Bafana. His passing comes just weeks after he helped South Africa reach the World Cup knockout stage. McKenzie described Adams as one of the brightest young talents in South African football. In his statement, he said the country was mourning with Adams’ family, teammates, and supporters who had watched him grow from a promising academy player into a full Bafana Bafana international.
The South African Football Players Union also paid tribute to Adams. Entertainment Weekly quoted the union as saying he had recently represented South Africa at the World Cup with “pride, courage and distinction,” calling his death an immeasurable loss to his family, clubs, teammates, and the wider football community. FIFA President Gianni Infantino offered his condolences, saying the global football community was thinking of Adams’ family, friends, and teammates.
Adams appeared in all three of South Africa’s group-stage matches at the 2026 World Cup. Reuters noted that he started against Mexico and the Czech Republic, and came on as a substitute in South Africa’s 1-0 victory over South Korea. That win propelled South Africa into the knockout rounds for the first time in the country’s history. Adams was an unused substitute when South Africa was eliminated by Canada in the Round of 32. E! News highlighted that Adams’ death followed South Africa’s historic tournament run.
McKenzie also disclosed that Adams had been coping with a family tragedy during the tournament. Entertainment Weekly reported that Adams’ grandmother, Marianna, died only hours before South Africa’s match against the Czech Republic in Atlanta. The minister said he later contacted Adams to offer condolences and encouragement, praising the midfielder for choosing to wear the national jersey while carrying that grief. He urged the public to refrain from speculation and to respect the privacy of Adams’ family and Mamelodi Sundowns during this difficult time.
Just Jared noted that Adams came through Stellenbosch FC’s academy and became the club’s first graduate to sign a professional contract in August 2020. He went on to make 139 appearances for Stellenbosch before moving to Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025. Reuters reported that Adams helped Sundowns win the CAF Confederation Cup in the 2025-26 season. Adams made his South Africa debut against Mozambique in 2022 and earned 13 caps for the national team, scoring two goals for Bafana Bafana, both in qualification matches.
