Jeff Hafley’s Expertise Won’t Save the Dolphins Cornerback Room

The Miami Dolphins are set for training camp with a nearly brand-new roster that includes a ton of low-cost veterans who were brought in during free agency, plus rookies and undrafted free agents hoping for significant playing time. One of the areas that is solely filled with these veterans and rookies is the cornerback room. While there are some carry-overs like Storm Duck and Jason Marshall Jr., the unit is severely lacking. While head coach Jeff Hafley cut his teeth on being a secondary expert, he may not even be able to save the unit.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementHafley worked as a defensive backs coach for the majority of his career through college and into the NFL. He has expressed excitement for the players in the building, but there are still some major concerns regarding the group overall. One major issue is the health of the unit. Storm Duck suffered a season-ending knee injury in 2025 that cut his season short, and is still recovering from said injury.Hafley commented on Duck during minicamp, stating he was “hoping” that the veteran cornerback was coming along a lot quicker than he was at that time. Granted, this was late June, and there has been some time between then and when training camp kicks off in late July. The same can be said about Darrell Baker Jr., one of the aforementioned veterans brought in. Baker is also dealing with an ailment that kept him out of action, but he could be ready to go by training camp.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementA player who could help rebound the group is Chris Johnson, an upcoming rookie drafted by the Dolphins at No. 27 overall. The former San Diego State prospect has impressed during OTAs and minicamp and has the versatility to play in the slot or outside. The issue with that is Johnson is a rookie and could have some growing pains in his first season in the NFL.Beyond Duck, Baker, and Johnson, the Dolphins will need some important second-year players to step up. One such player is Jason Marshall Jr., who has also impressed in camp and could push for a starting position.JuJu Brents is another player who could push himself into a starting role, as he will be entering his second season in Miami. Ethan Bonner is also another player in a similar position who could benefit from familiarity within the organization.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementBeyond that are Marco Wilson, Alex Austin, Ethan Robinson, and A.J. Green III.The pure depth and potential starters for the Dolphins leave a lot to be desired, and injuries are starting to become a concern, as they were in 2025. When Duck, Artie Burns, and Kader Kohou all suffered season-ending injuries, the team was forced to bring in Jack Jones and Rasul Douglas. Both veterans played well, with Douglas having a big bounce-back year. However, the Dolphins let both go to other teams.Training camp will certainly start to show where the cornerback unit is as a whole, and it would not be the least bit shocking if Hafley and general manager Jon-Er
