Yaxel Lendeborg is viewed as the Warriors’ draft pick of the future, with the 11th overall selection signaling a hopeful path for NBA basketball in the Bay Area. A skilled and seasoned forward who brings a championship background from his time with the Michigan Wolverines, Lendeborg is seen as a promising cornerstone for a Golden State team under pressure to return to title contention quickly. He has earned glowing praise from new teammates and general manager Mike Dunleavy, and owner Joe Lacob has added his own optimistic assessment of the rookie.
Jimmy Butler weighed in on Lendeborg, saying, “I know that guy be speaking his mind. I like that. He plays tough. He is tough. I bet he plays dominos, too. I’m gonna have to crack his head in that.” The sentiment from the Warriors camp has been widely positive, with Lacob telling the media, “We got a great player. We are so excited about it. I’m very fired up. It couldn’t have gone any better for us. We got the guy we were looking to get. I think he’s a game changer. Jimmy is going to love playing with him. I think this guy is just fantastic.”
Lacob did spark attention on draft night when a live broadcast appeared to capture a dispute between Dunleavy and Lacob over the pick, prompting speculation that Lacob might have been pushing for another player, such as Aday Mara or Nate Ament. In response, Lacob reiterated his positive view of the selection, saying, “We got a great player. We are so excited about it. The draft is a… look, it’s hard. There are 29 other teams all competing for a limited amount of talent out there, great talent. I’m very fired up. It couldn’t have gone any…” while Dunleavy joked about Bay Area golf courses when asked about the confrontation, and Lacob’s comments during his own media session appeared to soften the moment.
Lacob expanded on why the draft is so challenging, noting how much talent exists and how every team is vying for it. He revealed that the Warriors had rated Lendeborg just about on par with Burries, with only Duke’s Cam Boozer clearly higher on their board, according to Tim Kawakami. Although he did not provide further specifics about other draft difficulties, he repeatedly praised Lendeborg and expressed enthusiasm for a future that includes him. Lendeborg’s arrival will bring considerable responsibility, underscoring the high expectations placed on him from day one.
