Jon Rahm is walking away from LIV Golf, and the financial cost of his decision is staggering. The two-time major champion has reached a separation agreement with the troubled golf league, surrendering claims to more than $100 million in remaining contract payments as he prepares for what could become a complicated return to the PGA Tour.MORE: Jake Sollon Fires 64 To Lead Dominican Republic Tour ChampionshipFor Rahm, the decision effectively ends one of professional golf’s most lucrative relationships less than three years after he stunned the sport by leaving the PGA Tour in December 2023.But there’s an important catch. The agreement, filed Wednesday in federal bankruptcy court in New Jersey, still requires judicial approval on November 5.Under the proposed terms, Rahm will regain control of his name, image and likeness rights, including commercial rights associated with his “Rahmbo” identity. He’ll also relinquish approximately $7.5 million in unpaid claims identified in LIV’s bankruptcy proceedings. That’s an enormous financial sacrifice, even for a player who reportedly signed a contract worth more than $300 million.Rahm’s representatives have already made his intentions clear. They described the proposed terms for a revamped LIV Golf as “unacceptable,” confirming the Spaniard won’t participate in the league’s planned 2027 relaunch. Now the bigger question becomes where he’ll play. The immediate answer is the DP World Tour.Rahm has committed to the Abu Dhabi Championship at Yas Links from Nov. 5-8, marking his first appearance at the tournament.”I’ve had some of the best weeks of my career in the UAE,” Rahm said when announcing his participation. The former world No. 1 currently stands 46th in the Race to Dubai rankings, placing him inside the top 70 eligible for Abu Dhabi. He’ll need to remain among the top 50 to qualify for the season-ending DP World Tour Championship. His PGA Tour future is considerably less straightforward.Commissioner Brian Rolapp has indicated there are no plans to reopen the special Returning Member Program that allowed Brooks Koepka to rejoin the tour earlier this year. That leaves Rahm potentially facing a one-year suspension before becoming eligible for reinstatement. The 2023 Masters champion has another advantage, however. His victory at Augusta National provides valuable tournament exemptions through 2028, potentially easing his eventual return to elite competition.Rahm also remains eligible for golf’s four major championships, ensuring he’ll continue competing against the world’s best players even without regular PGA Tour access.Meanwhile, LIV Golf faces its own uncertain future following the withdrawal of Saudi financial backing and its subsequent bankruptcy filing. For Rahm, the next chapter won’t be about collecting another enormous signing bonus.MORE: Rory McIlroy Trails As Niklas Nørgaard Leads Storm-Hit India ChampionshipIt’ll be about rebuilding his place in professional golf. And after sacrificing nine figures to
