Fall camp is designed to test physical limits, build chemistry, and instill the mental resilience needed to win tight Big Ten games in November. According to running back Jordan Marshall, Michigan is going through a grueling preparation period under head coach Kyle Whittingham that is pushing the roster to new levels of physical conditioning.Addressing the media following an intense session, Marshall provided a peek into the demanding practice structures implemented by the staff. One of the most challenging additions to fall camp has been high-volume, unbroken team periods designed to simulate the absolute worst conditions a team can face during a live game.Marshall detailed a specific period from practice where the offense and defense ran a 14-play drive with no substitutions allowed for either unit. Pushing through 14 consecutive snaps of first-team offense against first-team defense at the very end of a hot practice tests far more than cardiovascular fitness. It creates an environment where physical fatigue is guaranteed, forcing players to rely purely on mental fortitude and trust in the player next to them.”We’re more conditioned, if you want me to be honest,” Marshall stated directly. “What you’ve been doing is like 14 plays, no subs, no anything. You just go. Nobody cares if you’re tired. You’ve got to fight through it. That’s preparing us for when we do have a long drive. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t dying at play 14, but it definitely builds a mental stamina of how much you can handle.”That physical edge is complemented by a deep level of communication happening between the offense and defense off the field. Marshall noted that players are constantly huddled in the locker room after practice, dissecting plays with one another. Offensively, young linebackers like Troy Bowles and Max Alford are asking questions about blocking schemes, while offensive players seek insight into defensive coverage rules.”We didn’t have these conversations in the locker room where I’m coming in and Troy’s like, ‘Jordan, what was this play that you ran and why are you guys doing this?'” Marshall shared. “When you have guys like that that are trying to learn the game, they’re going to play so much faster when it comes to game time.”The ultimate goal of this intense camp is simple consistency. Marshall stressed that the message across the offense since day one of practice has been eliminating volatile ups and downs. The team is focused on a steady, daily climb to ensure they hit their absolute peak for the opener on September 5 and maintain that momentum through the rest of the schedule. After weeks of hitting their own teammates in brutal weather, the team is unified, highly conditioned, and eager to finally face a real opponent.
