Julian Nagelsmann releases statement on resignation, looks for fresh start

After a disastrous World Cup, Julian Nagelsmann announced his resignation earlier on Friday. The former head coach acknowledged that a change was needed for both himself and the DFB. “In recent days, following our exit, I have reflected extensively and spoken with trusted people in my personal circle and within the association. This decision has not been easy for me at all. My primary objective has always been the team’s success. After such a painful disappointment, the team deserves the chance for a genuine new start,” Nagelsmann said in a statement released by the DFB. “I would like to thank my coaching staff, the support staff, and everyone within the association who supported us, and in particular the players, with whom I was able to work in such a trusting manner. A special thanks also goes to the fans. You carried us, you believed in us, you gave us energy, even in tough times. It deeply saddens me that we have disappointed you and that we were unable to provide you with more nights of football at this World Cup. You deserved far more.” After a promising start, Nagelsmann’s tenure collapsed during the World Cup, mirroring the fate of former Germany boss Hansi Flick. Now, both Nagelsmann and the DFB will look for a new direction, with Jürgen Klopp seen as Germany’s top target.
