Juventus revisit move for Milan defender Tomori on one condition

Juventus have rekindled their interest in Fikayo Tomori, roughly a year and a half after a proposed move for the Milan defender fell through when he rejected the option. Reports from La Gazzetta dello Sport, picked up by CalcioMercato, indicate that the Bianconeri are again evaluating Tomori as a potential addition to their back line. They are attracted by his wealth of experience, his familiarity with Serie A, and a profile that aligns with Luciano Spalletti’s strategic preferences.
However, any potential deal is contingent on departures from Juventus. General manager Giovanni Carnevali’s leadership team at the club is keen to slim down the squad before adding new players, and Federico Gatti is among those who could leave. With his playing time squeezed by the arrival of Bremer, Gatti would likely command a fee that yields a healthy profit for the club. Napoli and potential moves to Turkey have been mentioned as plausible routes out for him. If Gatti does depart, Juventus would be positioned to push ahead in their pursuit of Tomori.
In fact, images from the Stadio Olimpico on March 1, 2026, capture Federico Gatti of Juventus celebrating a third goal in the Serie A clash against Roma, underscoring the real-time competition within Juventus’ defensive lineup. The prospect of Gatti moving on would thus clear space for Tomori, who remains a central figure in Milan’s plans but could be enticed by a fresh chapter elsewhere. The England international’s contract with Milan runs through 2027, and his role could shrink further with the arrival of new faces, potentially making him more open to a switch than in the past.
From Milan’s perspective, selling Tomori would provide a valuable revenue stream that could be reinvested in the squad. For Juventus, bringing in Tomori would represent a significant market opportunity, but only after the club has resolved its current defensive balance and ensured adequate cap space. Tomori has been a mainstay at San Siro since arriving in 2021, making 214 appearances and scoring seven goals, and playing a key part in Milan’s 2022 Scudetto triumph as well as the club’s Supercoppa Italiana success. Whether Tomori’s chapter with Milan is drawing to a close will largely depend on Juventus’ ability to manage their own defensive reinforcements and to create the conditions that would make Tomori a realistic and advantageous transfer.
Ultimately, Milan will weigh the financial benefits of a sale against the tactical implications of parting with a trusted defender. Juventus, meanwhile, must navigate the peripheral moves, ensuring they have the room to pursue Tomori if Gatti departs and if the right price and terms can be agreed. The negotiations will hinge on both clubs’ broader squad strategies, wage structures, and the overall balance of the backline, as well as the willingness of both Tomori and his representatives to entertain a relocation after years of service with Milan.
