Manchester United have always treated the academy as the lifeblood of the club. From the dazzling Busby Babes of the 1950s to the celebrated Class of ’92, United’s success has remained closely tied to the development and emergence of homegrown players. In today’s squad, academy graduate and Youth Cup winner Kobbie Mainoo has arguably established himself as United’s most influential midfielder. The club also handed first-team debuts to several Carrington products last season, including brothers Jack and Tyler Fletcher, Shea Lacey, and Bendito Mantato. With Michael Carrick having been appointed permanent manager, there is every reason to believe he will continue to promote young talents to the first team, especially as there is growing anticipation around the extraordinarily talented 15-year-old JJ Gabriel, who is widely regarded as a potential future star and a fixture of discussions among Old Trafford faithful.
The club’s official website recently announced the new intake of players who have signed their first-year scholarship contracts ahead of the 2026/2027 campaign. The announcement noted that the milestone was celebrated in a ceremony held in the Manchester Suite at Old Trafford, where families and friends gathered to mark the youngsters’ significant achievement. Academy director Stephen Torpey addressed those present, expressing pride in passing the baton to the next generation and underscoring his role as the latest custodian of the club’s renowned Academy.
Among the signings are two individuals with notable family connections to former players. Jacey Carrick, the manager’s own son, signed a scholarship deal, alongside Kai Rooney, who was also part of the ceremony. The class also includes Harley Emsden-James, a defender who joined from Southampton last summer, and has now secured a professional contract with the club.
The full list of the 15 players who have signed new contracts is as follows: Jaume Camacho Sidos (Midfielder), Jacey Carrick (Midfielder), Edson Dejonge-Seiros (Forward), Harley Emsden-James (Defender), Idris Fabiyi (Defender), Jake Ford (Goalkeeper), Gazimagamed Ibragimov (Defender), Connor Laurie (Defender), Harlem McLaughlin (Midfielder), Camron Mpofu (Forward), Jodie Nganga (Midfielder), Samuel O’Brien (Defender), Kai Rooney (Forward), Pharell Silvester (Midfielder), and Emmanuel Ziro (Midfielder).
As this new generation comes through, the club’s commitment to cultivating homegrown talent remains unwavering. The support of the academy continues to be a cornerstone of Manchester United’s identity, shaping the future on and off the pitch. The continued emphasis on nurturing young players ensures the club maintains its tradition of producing players who can rise through the ranks and contribute meaningfully at the highest levels of football.
