Kalvin Phillips has spoken openly about how injuries have derailed his loan spell at Sheffield United and complicated his time at Manchester City. The 30-year-old midfielder joined the Blades hoping to gain regular playing time that had eluded him at City since his arrival from Leeds United in 2022. However, an early injury restricted him to just two appearances before he was sidelined for the rest of the season, leaving him to confront a cycle of infrequent matches followed by injuries.
In a Q&A relayed by the Yorkshire Post, Phillips admitted that the last three years of limited game time had contributed to his fragility, making him more prone to injuries and hindering his ability to regain form. “It was all right, all two games of it,” he said. “I suffered an injury which kept me out for the rest of the season, so that’s been the problem for me the last three years of not playing regularly – it’s made me acquire more injuries and stuff like that. So I’m looking forward to hopefully having a good season, actually.”
His comments reflect a broader pattern in his recent career: a lack of match sharpness feeding into physical vulnerabilities, which in turn prevent him from building momentum to cement a role at City. The future at Manchester City remains uncertain, with City’s ongoing rebuild under Enzo Maresca and a club-record signing of Elliott Anderson from Nottingham Forest adding to the competition for central midfield. Whether Phillips remains at City, goes on another loan, or moves on permanently will depend on how he balances recovery, form, and opportunities in the coming months. What his remarks emphasize is a clear determination to move forward and focus on what lies ahead.
