Kam Curl, Quentin Lake get no respect in ESPN’s safety rankings

Safety is a position of strength for the Los Angeles Rams, boasting a trio of playmakers at that spot: Kam Curl, Quentin Lake and Kamren Kinchens. You could even group Jaylen McCollough into that group as an impact player on the back end.As highly regarded as they are within the Rams’ building and among Los Angeles fans, evaluators around the league are pretty low on them. ESPN polled coaches, executives and scouts on the top safeties in the NFL, and no Rams players made the top 10.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementIn fact, neither Curl nor Lake were even honorable mentions, of which there were five. Only Lake was among the 12 players “also receiving votes.” That means Curl didn’t receive a single vote as one of the better safeties in football. It’s not terribly surprising considering the lack of turnovers created by the Rams’ safeties, but they’re still outstanding players. Lake’s versatility in the slot and as a deep safety is a difference-maker for the Rams, especially given the team’s lack of talent at cornerback the last couple of years.Curl, meanwhile, did everything for the Rams last season. He was second the team with 122 tackles, had two sacks, two tackles for a loss, two interceptions and five passes defensed. He was the only safety in the NFL with at least 100 tackles, two interceptions and two sacks, joining seven other players (all linebackers) as the only ones to hit those marks in 2025.According to Pro Football Focus, Kinchens and Curl were eighth and ninth, respectively, among qualified safeties last season with grades of 78.0 and 77.8. Lake was 24th with a grade of 69.5, led by his 76.8 run defense grade.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThere’s no question Lake and Curl are two of the better safeties in the league, and even Kinchens deserves recognition as a top talent, too. This article originally appeared on Rams Wire: Kam Curl, Quentin Lake get no respect in ESPN’s safety rankings
