It was a grand opening for one of K-State venerated son’s, as Collin Kline’s first win as head coach was a smashing success. Now it’s time to repeat that, but with a major step up in competition level.Washington State heads to Manhattan for their first-ever matchup with the Wildcats after a rough Sunday matchup with in-state rivals Washington that saw the Cougars fall to 0-1 on the season with a 24-10 defeat at the hands of the Huskies. Despite a decent Cougars defensive effort, UW held a 10-0 lead headed into the fourth quarter before both teams finally started moving the ball and scoring some points.The Cougars defense will be the biggest step up for the Wildcats, who generally had their way with the Colonels last Saturday. Not that the Huskies had anything close to the firepower or execution of the Wildcats last weekend, but at least there should be more athletes and tougher schemes than the Cats faced in week on. Likewise, the K-State defense will be tested by the Cougars offense that was stymied by the Huskies for most of the game, but features a run-heavy attack that K-State’s newly re-aligned defense hasn’t had to face.That Sunday matchup for the Apple Cup, coupled with the early start time — 11am CDT means 9am for the Cougar players coming from Washington state — should give the Wildcats an extra advantage. That advantage, and WSU’s not-great opener, show up in the betting lines, as the Wildcats are a 17.5-point favorite at home today.This may not be a true test for Collin Klein and the Wildcats, but it’s a team that will be recognized by voters and a convincing win should be a good confidence boost here in the early going.We’ve got an 11:00am CT kickoff from Bill Snyder Family Stadium being aired on TNT and streaming on HBO Max with J.B.
