Collin Klein finds himself in a markedly different situation at Kansas State compared with most first-year coaches. First, he is returning to lead his alma mater, and second, he was recently part of the Wildcats’ coaching staff as an assistant. That combination makes the adjustment process smoother than it typically would be for someone stepping into a new environment. Since Klein took the reins, the transition has been notably seamless, with him settling in quickly and earning the trust of the locker room.
“From my perspective, things are going very well,” said K-State running back Joe Jackson. “He’s created an incredible atmosphere within our facilities and throughout our program. Everyone has started to buy in more. I feel like this has been a solid foundation for where we want to go and the goals we have for this team. He’s laid a strong groundwork.”
Klein, who starred for the Wildcats in the early 2010s, remains one of the school’s all-time greats and one of its most beloved figures. Many view him as the perfect fit to replace Chris Klieman, who stepped down after a successful tenure. Klein’s familiarity with the program also gives him an edge, as he already knows the players and culture intimately.
Another advantage Klein brings is his prior relationship with Wildcats quarterback Avery Johnson. While serving as the offensive coordinator, Klein played a role in Johnson’s recruitment to Manhattan. After a stint at Texas A&M, Klein has again deepened that connection, which could strengthen team chemistry across the board. The hope is that that rapport will translate into tangible improvements on the field.
“I think he’s brought in great players and a great staff,” Johnson said. “It’s made being back in the building enjoyable again. When you inject Fun into the workouts, the competition, and the practice, it raises the level of play and makes games that much better. He’s doing a fantastic job in these early months.”
Klein’s impact extends beyond on-field performance. His return has revitalized the program’s energy, reawakening the sense of enthusiasm and commitment that has long defined Kansas State football. As the team continues to work through spring and heading into the season, the questions around how quickly the Wildcats can translate early momentum into sustained success remain, but the early signs are promising. Klein’s leadership, combined with his established ties to the program and his growing rapport with players like Johnson, suggests a trajectory that could keep Kansas State competitive in the near term and beyond.
This moment in Klein’s career is as much about culture as it is about results. By reconnecting with the program’s history while infusing it with new energy, he’s positioned to guide Kansas State toward its stated goals. If the early months are any indication, the foundation he’s laid appears to be sturdy enough to support a productive season and a bright future for the Wildcats.
