​The crazy, messy world of college sports athlete eligibility just helped the Arkansas Razorbacks. Mark Mitchell had submitted paperwork to attend the University of Kentucky and give coach Mark Pope the missing roster piece he sorely needed, but the SEC’s recent move to clamp down on player movement and lingering legal entanglements surrounding eligibility led Mitchell to go back to Missouri on Monday afternoon. College basketball analyst Jeff Goodman put the matter plainly: “There were multiple hoops for him to be eligible at Kentucky,” Goodman said. “At Missouri, it gives him a better opportunity to be eligible, and today was the last day to enroll at Missouri.”Arkansas basketball fans, Louisville fans, and a lot of other national college hoops fans are reveling in Mark Pope’s downfall. To be fair, this is not a failure on Pope’s part as much as it is a creation of the thorny legal thicket which is derailing a number of players’ attempts to gain eligibility for the coming season. Some are apparently secure upon transferring, but some are not. It depends on the jurisdiction and the legal particulars attached to each case. Kentucky and Pope were not as fortunate as other schools and coaches whose prized transfers are still currently eligible to play and seem good to go for the coming season.All of that aside, it can still be said that Mark Pope needed to lock down his roster spots earlier so that he didn’t have to depend on a late-August transfer situation and attendant eligibility scramble falling his way. If Pope had already shored up his UK roster at every spot, this news wouldn’t be nearly as damaging. To that extent, Pope still does deserve criticism.It’s great for Arkansas and John Calipari. The Hogs aren’t a lock to finish ahead of Kentucky, but they are now clearly better than the Wildcats. The two teams might have been roughly equal with Mitchell in Big Blue, but not now. Arkansas has one less frontline challenger for second place in the SEC behind overwhelming No. 1 Florida. Being able to say he has a fundamentally better basketball program than Kentucky will always be a big selling point for John Calipari.Not to be ignored in all of this is that Arkansas is in fact dealing with its own eligibility issue. Miikka Muurinen still has to be fully cleared to play. Experts think it will happen, but given how turbulent eligibility fights are these days. Arkansas and Calipari won’t exhale until Muurinen officially gets the green light. As long as he does get cleared, UA has a chance to be really special this season.
