Kentucky Wildcats standout tied for top-paid college hoops player

The Kentucky Wildcats added a few players early in the transfer portal, namely Zoom Diallo and Alex Wilkins, but they didn’t have that go-to star that would really put them over the top for quite some time. After Malachi Moreno and Milan Momcilovic withdrew from the NBA Draft process, Mark Pope got his guys, and this team now has what it takes to make a deep run next season. Moreno was already committed to coming back if he didn’t test the draft waters, which he opted to avoid as returning will likely be a better play for him both in the short- and long-term future.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementFor Momcilovic, he will likely have a capped NBA career given his limited ceiling and athleticism, but at the collegiate level, he’s one of the brightest stars. Momcilovic averaged 16.9 points per game last season with the Iowa State Cyclones, who knocked out the Kentucky Wildcats in the second round. Iowa State was among the best teams in the country, and Momcilovic’s shooting was a key reason for that success. While the Cats are lucky that Momcilovic chose Lexington, he certainly didn’t come at a low pricetag. Per a valuation report from On3, Momcilovic and Louisville’s Flory Bidunga were tied as the highest-paid college hoops player, with Miami quarterback Darian Mensah as the top collegiate player. Bidunga and Momcilovic were the lone basketball players in the top five.$6 million seems virtually unheard of if you had said that a few years ago. Momcilovic and the Cats will have lofty expectations when they take the court in the fall, so making those dollars count is going to be important for Pope and the basketball program.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementWith Pope and his staff wanting to run and gun, the best shooter in the country should help them accomplish just that. This article originally appeared on UK Wildcats Wire: Kentucky Wildcats standout tied for top-paid college hoops player
