Kimi Antonelli Poised to Cushion Formula 1 Lead at 2026 British Grand Prix

Kimi Antonelli’s championship lead looked a lot safer a week ago, before Mercedes teammate George Russell trimmed it from 50 points to 40 with a victory at the Red Bull Ring. Now the series heads to Silverstone for a sprint weekend at the 2026 British Grand Prix that could go in one of two directions: Antonelli widening his gap, or this turning into a genuine internal fight within the Mercedes garage. Our pick: Antonelli regains the initiative on Sunday, with Russell second on home soil and Lando Norris completing the podium. But there’s a caveat: keep an eye on Max Verstappen, who proved quicker in Austria than he has all year.
Antonelli has claimed six pole positions in eight rounds, and Mercedes has converted five of those into wins, Austria the notable exception. Verstappen crashed in Q3, Russell picked up pole and converted it on Sunday, while Antonelli finished third—less a loss of control by him, more a slip of fate. Silverstone should flip the script. The track is around 68.6% full throttle with minimal braking—only about 12%—which rewards energy management over the marginal mechanical grip that briefly favored Red Bull at Spielberg. The Maggotts, Becketts and Chapel sequence demands sustained high-speed commitment, and Antonelli has demonstrated comfort with that all year. Add a compressed schedule and just one practice session before sprint qualifying, and the team with the strongest baseline setup gains an early advantage; that has been Mercedes all season.
George Russell travels to his home race with momentum. His Austrian victory ended a stretch of five consecutive wins for his teammate. He’s also 0-for-2 at Silverstone, with a late retirement in 2024 and a disastrous 2025 strategy call. A car that suits him and the supportive crowd make a second place a realistic target, not a stretch.
Lando Norris carries extra weight—last year he won this race at his home circuit, becoming McLaren’s first home victor, and he arrives as the defending Silverstone champ. The flowing layout should suit Norris’s McLaren more than the stop-start Red Bull Ring did, and while Austria didn’t yield a podium, the signs were positive.
Possible spoiler: Max Verstappen. He showed more pace in Austria than at any point this season, meaning his threat looms if Mercedes falters.
