There was heartbreak for Kinlochshiel when the Wester Ross outfit came within seconds of knocking out Kingussie in the Tulloch Camanachd Cup quarter-finals, only to concede a 3-2 defeat in extra time at The Dell. Meanwhile, holders Newtonmore sailed through with a 6-0 home win over lower-league Glenurquhart, and Skye edged Fort William 3-2 in Portree. Oban Camanachd completed the semi-final lineup by defeating Caberfeidh 4-1 at Mossfield. Kyles finally enjoyed a breakthrough in a testing campaign, collecting their first Mowi Premiership points in a 3-2 local derby victory over Col Glen.
Shiel appeared to be cruising when Jay MacRae struck after four minutes and then doubled the lead two minutes later. Yet a dramatic turnaround followed as John MacRae was sent off with ten minutes remaining, prompting a rapid response from Zander Michie. The contest took another dramatic twist when Robert Mabon fired home a last-minute equaliser to force extra time, and Dylan Borthwick then clinched the win for Kingussie with five minutes left in the additional period.
Newtownmore, after a slow start, finally breached the resistance of the lone remaining lower-league side. Struan Ross opened the scoring, sparking a burst of goals with doubles from Ross himself and Iain Robinson, and additional strikes from Brodie MacBean and Matthew Sloss sealing a commanding 5-0 victory. In Oban, Caberfeidh started well through Farquhar MacRae, but Camanachd responded with Ross Campbell equalising and a Lorne Dickie brace, complemented by a Connor Howe strike, to put them through as the sole south-side club in the semi-final draw announced at the refurbished Inverness Castle on Monday, July 13.
Ewan Campbell also grabbed an early opener for Fort William in Portree, yet Neil MacVicar quickly answered back, followed by goals from Ruaridh MacLeod and John Gillies to push Fort into a 3-1 advantage, before Victor Smith’s second for Fort completed the scoring sequence. Skye’s cup run came at the expense of their league position as they slipped to the bottom of the Mowi Premiership as a result of Kyles’ triumph. Ethan Kerr struck twice and Joe MacVicar added another for Kyles to lead 3-0 at the break, only for Andrew MacVicar and Scott MacVicar to mount a comeback and keep the tie tense late on. Skye sit bottom with a single point, but they still have two games in hand over Kyles and Col Glen, who sit just one point ahead of them.
In the National Division, Lovat closed the gap to two points atop the table by defeating Glasgow Mid Argyll 7-3 at Yoker, a result that narrowed Glenurquhart’s lead. Kilmallie earned a 2-1 victory at Inveraray, a repeat of the previous Saturday’s cup tie, while Oban Celtic were hammered 5-0 by visitors Bute. This run of results shaped a tight, drama-filled weekend across the Camanachd landscape, setting up a compelling stage for the remainder of the season as teams jostle for top-table positions and Cup glory alike.
