Knicks Insider Makes Notable Jack Kayil Prediction After Summer League Debut

Jack Kayil’s first game in a New York Knicks uniform may have shifted the conversation about his immediate future. After the 20-year-old German guard impressed in his NBA Summer League debut on Saturday, longtime Knicks insider Stefan Bondy floated the idea that New York could keep the second-round pick stateside rather than sending him back overseas for another season. “Wouldn’t be surprised if Jack Kayil indeed stays with the Knicks next season rather than getting stashed,” Bondy wrote on X.
The prediction followed Kayil’s 12-point performance in the Knicks’ 70-49 Summer League loss to the San Antonio Spurs, a display that also reflected his eagerness to begin his NBA career as soon as possible. The Athletic’s James L. Edwards III reported that Kayil told him his dream is to play in the NBA for the Knicks. When pressed about whether he expects to be in New York this season or return overseas, Kayil admitted his future remains uncertain, saying only that they would “see what happens.”
Kayil wasted little time showing why New York traded for his draft rights. After missing the Summer League opener due to a contractual clearance issue with Serbian club Mega Basket, the 39th overall pick finally took the floor Saturday and emerged as one of the few offensive bright spots for the reigning NBA champions. Coming off the bench, he finished with 12 points, five rebounds, three assists and one steal in 21 minutes, shooting 5-for-14 from the field and 2-for-7 from beyond the arc. Despite a hesitant start, he warmed up by knocking down back-to-back three-pointers and flashed the ball-handling, pace and playmaking that had made him one of Europe’s most intriguing young guards.
On a night when New York shot only 26.7 percent from the floor and scored just 49 points, Kayil was the Knicks’ third-highest scorer behind fellow second-round pick Tyler Nickel (16) and former first-round selection Pacome Dadiet (13). Yet even with a solid offensive showing, whether Kayil can actually crack the Knicks’ opening-night roster remained an open question.
Before Summer League, SNY’s Ian Begley cited league expectations that Kayil would continue developing in Europe after spending last season on loan with ALBA Berlin, where he earned Bundesliga Best Young Player honors. The Knicks’ current roster situation only compounds that challenge. New York has just one standard roster spot remaining under the second apron, and league-wide consensus is that the defending champions will deploy it to add another veteran center before training camp. That reality makes a standard NBA contract for Kayil unlikely in the immediate future. If he stays within the organization this season, a more realistic route could be a two-way contract with the Westchester Knicks, allowing him to keep developing while remaining tethered to New York’s system.
Bondy’s observation that Kayil could stay in New York for the season—even if only in a two-way capacity—suggests that the 20-year-old’s strong debut may have opened the door for a faster but still carefully managed ascent to the NBA, rather than a long stint in Europe. As the summer league momentum builds into training camp, all eyes will be on whether Kayil can translate this initial promise into a sustained foothold with the Knicks or whether the organization will opt for continued development overseas before he becomes a regular contributor in the NBA.
